Description
I have to give credit for parts of this timeline to ynot1989.deviantart.com/ .In this timeline everything in the 20 July Plot goes to plan and Hitler is killed by the bomb and after a short Civil War the Nazi regime is overthrown by the military and most of the SS and Nazi command were captured or killed. The new German government sues for peace with the allies. The armistice includes such items as their retaining their pre-WW1 boundaries, they keep their pre-war gains of Austria and the Sudetenland, that the German populated of South Tyrol would be annexed by Germany, and that Alscace-Lorraine would become an autonomous territory within France. Non-territorial demands included no foreign military occupation and that Germany would deal with their own war-criminals. With the Invasion of Normandy having just happened a month earlier the Allies made Germany accept full armistice on all sides, even the Soviets. The Soviets were screaming for blood and the full disarmament of Germany, the western allies proposed that German ground forces would virtually stay unchanged but that Germany's Navy would be reduced.
The Soviets were less then happy on their gains with only the Baltic states and Eastern Poland. Like in OTL the Soviet occupied areas were forced into Communist governments with East Polands capital being East Warsaw, and like in OTL a wall was constructed around East Warsaw to prevent people from leaving. NATO was formed around the same time as in OTL and much bigger thanks to the Berlin Declaration made all former European Axis countries full fledged NATO members. Now NATO in this timeline is still the military alliance it is in OTL but it is also like a trans-atlantic EU. The Soviet Unions response to this was the Eurasian Coalition of Communist States, which includes the European Communist nations but also Asian allies like North Korea and China. While countries like Turkey and Spain join NATO similar to OTL, Sweden joining NATO was an eventuality as Sweden had already participated and in many NATO missions, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia joined after an almost decade long Civil War against Titos communist forces. It was halfway through the war that the Yugoslavian government decided to join NATO to accept NATO aid. Ireland hadn't even considered joining NATO till the UK gave the Irish government indisputable that the IRA was being funded directly by the Soviet Union.
Due to their small gains in Europe and the smaller spread of Soviet forces in those countries the Western Soviet Union was able to grow more modestly and when the two Polands reunited and the Communist governments in the Baltics ended, the Soviet Union was able to hold onto almost all their territory except for the Caucus nations. Germany in this situation became a very close ally of the U.S. with Germany even helping the U.S. finish their nuclear program and U.S.-German technology cooperation becomes commonplace during and after the Cold War with Lockheed-Messerschmidt becoming a symbol of that cooperation. Germany also managed to keep a power status and managed to replace France as a permanent UN council member in this timeline.
