This is another character that popped up through a dream. The setting is sort of post-apocalyptic. Aliens had attacked Earth when it was at it's most vulnerable (factions of different gangs all over the world pretty much fighting over dwindling resources) things were ugly before (cannabalism being a huge business for a particularly ruthless gang known as the Leatherbacks) but now there is the fight between humans and The Collective.

The guy is about 18 years old, I remember he had a little sister and I'm pretty sure his dad has been off to war for years and his mom is dead. I remember seeing them hiding inside of gutted bus body that was sort of buried in the earth a little bit, I think their house was underground. Anyways, he gets drafted into a military faction and works as a scout for a year or two. Later down the line the military group is on the edge of a fantastic new fighting machine and picks him to pilot their last machine. He learns that they are powered by the human soul and that it has tangible powers. Use of the machines comes at a huge risk, though. The more time a person spends inside the machine, the more they begin to believe it is their actual body. One of their top fighters practically IS the machine, he hasn't been able to leave it for years.

The kid has problems running the last machine because the last driver went missing, but it turns out he sort of became a literal "ghost in the machine" and becomes violent towards the new driver, viewing him as something of an infection or disease. Because of the rejection, he is unable to pilot and goes back to scouting. During his scouting missions he discovers pieces of old machines that were disabled in battle, so he takes the pieces and builds his own from scratch. The new machine isn't without it's problems, as each piece holds parts of the old drivers souls. He learns to negotiate and team up with them to accomplish his missions and become a powerful pilot.

IT'S WEIRD I KNOW. But I really liked the vibe I got from the whole dream, so I'mma stitch other similar dreams together to make a story.
