Description
Scored this Motherboard and some peripherals (GPU, Soundcard, Videocard, PSU and an HDD) for 270kr. (~30 us$) (This board costs around 230 us$ retail (Not including the two CPUs (160 us$/each), GPU (Club3D 6200 AGP 15-20 us$), Videocard, Soundcard, PSU (Semi-Broken (Gives standby power (+5V))) or the HDD (400GB 7200RPM 16MB cache)))This is a tyan tiger k8w it has two AMD Opteron 244 (single core, single thread) on it, running at 1800 MHz, with 2GB of system memory. (DDR)
It's an old workstation motherboard from around 2004.
Going to connect a 400 GB HDD to it and probably run Linux. Not a powerful gaming computer by today's standards, tho it looks a bit intimidating with 2 CPUs on it, it's probably rather comparable to a Raspberry pie or something.
Edit:
After a bit of research, I discovered that this motherboard is made for high end servers, and apparently (according to a few old threads from a few forums) it was a rather nice piece of computing gear back in the day, something to refer to as an expensive gaming rig or something.
And well, remembering back to 2006 and one of my first computers, a Packard bell with a single core Intel Celeron 2,9GHz CPU and 512MB of RAM and the GPU was either integrated in the CPU or on the motherboard (I don't remember), with a cost of ~1000 us$. Considering that, then this Tyan Tiger k8w is rather powerful, and being 2 years older, so it probably had a cost of a few thousand dollars or something back in the day.
Tho this board has some bugs in the BIOS, newer PCI drivers in the OS makes both the AGP and PCI interface with the GPU crash, this is thankfully fixed in the 2007 version of the BIOS, (I have the latest 2003 version) therefor I bought a new BIOS chip with the latest software on it for ~17 us$. Hopefully this fixes the problem and makes it possible for me to finally install an OS on it.
Edit:
The card still doesn't want to run Linux...
I haven't tried to run any other operating system on it so far, but I might try it in the future.
Maybe have a storage server running on it or something, though, it's far from the most energy efficient PC.
