Description Chapter One

M. Sharon Brown woke suddenly. She woke not realizing any time had passed – five seconds ago, she had been driving a hovercraft directly toward a very large cargo ship, of the floating sort. She came to terms with her death as completely as she really could, with only five seconds to ponder it, the huge ship floating for a head-on collision, her hovercraft having a pop-off lid that was currently popped off, leaving her with no protection but for the glass windshield in front of her face.

Understandably, she was more than a tad bit confused when she woke up, feeling only a little off, but otherwise completely okay.

Upon opening her eyes, she discovered that something about the color of the world looked just a bit... off. After a few seconds to adjust to the event of light, she realized she that the odd quilt, made out of several shades of grey and black instead of being colorful like most quilts, was on an oddly grey wall, and was hanging behind a light grey couch with grey flowers. And the window outside lead to a world with grey grass, off-white sky, and dark and light grey trees.

And her head hurt. Badly.

She groaned and closed her eyes, trying to think clearly. Okay, so she was now color blind, and guessing by the specific wacky flower print of the couch across from her, she was in the coziest room of Susette Ronalds's house, which consisted of that bit over there with the quilt in the chair on one side, with a hospital-style bed in the middle and walls of white boards with writing all over them to the other side of the room. She was sure there was also a bookshelf somewhere in the room, but she didn't want to think about things that weren't wholely pertinent. Her head really did hurt.

Okay. So, obviously, she was in a crash, of the hovercraft sort, and Su had ended up taking care of her, and somewhere along the line something happened to take away her ability to see color and give her a headache. Probably near the “in a crash” part of the line.

So – so, somehow, Su had gotten put in charge of her care, which didn't really make sense. Why didn't it make sense? Mild amnesia. She'd have to remember that to tell Su. So, it didn't make sense. Because Su primarily did research! On – on clones, lately. Clones, and transferring brains and consciousness, and stuff like that. Su always loved those old, old science fiction stories from the early 2000s and late 1900s, though Sharon could barely read the Old English in them... Okay. Get back on topic. So, why would Su be taking care of Sharon after a crash?

Or maybe she'd been unconscious for some time? Su would be likely to take her in if she'd been in, in a coma or something like that, where she'd need long-term care and Su would have to go visit her at the hospital for some time. But – no. She was in Su's patient bed. Where Su put the clones. Where would she put the clones if Sharon was in the patient bed?

Sharon scrunched her face in confusion, and then sighed. She'd have to figure this out later, because her head really was starting to hurt, and she'd probably not be able to figure out what was going on until Susette appeared and told her what was happening.

Susette looked over her charts and various pieces of equipment, and swore violently. She'd messed up.

The eyes were imperfect.

She hoped desperately she hadn't made too bad of a mistake, that the eyes worked at all, but this really was unforgivable. She'd been so perfectly precise with everything else, yet somehow, she had managed to mess it up. At least this was her only mistake, but it was a sad mistake to make.

On the other hand, she noticed cheerfully, her subject had woken up at one point, and gone back to sleep, with all her monitors indicating she was perfectly healthy. That was good. And since Su's patient hadn't screamed bloody murder – Su would've heard it from the other room – it was probable that the mind had been properly transferred, as well, and that the subject's memories were intact.

She wondered what Sharon would say, when she discovered what happened. Su wasn't sure if she was looking forward to finding out how Sharon was doing or dreading how she might respond to Su cloning her.
