Description
This is my first attempt at designing the main character from a story I've been working on for nearly 3 years now.The story is about fallen angels caught in a sort of moral limbo (several aren't so much evil as they are just irrationally pissed off or having Greta Garbo moments).
Nico is the central character in the story, a fallen angel who didn't intend to fall...it was the only option open.
This one is done mainly with a 2B and HB pencil on smooth bristol with very little blending.
The first section of the story attached to this photo is here:

Very nice! I love the way you did the shading on his face. It is very light and give an ethereal feeling to the drawing. The details on his hair are beautiful. His eyebrows are well shaped, but a bit to light.... remember that your eyebrows are usually the same color as your hair. His lips are very wrinkly. Was it that way in your reference photo? (If you were using a ref, that is.) It looks like he has chapped lips. The eyes are perfect.

Thank you
I can see what you mean about the eyebrows (though for a long time I darkened my hair to match my eyebrows haha).
I used several reference photos to piece him together...my own little frankenstein character. That's pretty much how the lips were in the reference photo. Thank you again for the comment on his eyes. That's usually the feature I spend the most time on when doing portraiture...trying to make sure there aren't dead eyes.

Thank you I'm really pleased that so many people have focused on the eyes. I think they are the feature I spent the most time on overall. I tried to make sure he didn't have dead eyes.

This is an amazing drawing! *jealous* The shading makes it look extremely realistic. The detail is great as well. There is not much I can say other than this is a spectacular piece!

Wow, sexy... And amazingly done! His hair looks especially real. I love his expression... I could probably go on about it all day.
Good job with the eyebrows too.
Anyway, very pretty, and well done. Faved! ^_^

Thanks
I wanted him to have a softer, but not overly ego-freak look. There are some guys that narcissism just oozes and I tried to keep away from that. The fun thing about your own characters is that you can be a total control freak and no one will complain haha.

No reference?
I really like the hatching; it's not only my favorite form of shading, but it also really brings out the hair, lips, and eyes.

teeeechnically I did have references. I founds bits and pieces from different faces that I liked or thought fit well with how I saw Nico in my head and used them when I pieced him together here...He's my own little Frankenstein of sorts.

Still, it's not an exact copy, which is what I meant.

The eyes look very realistic. And that hair is fantastic. This looks like a guy I'd like to see walking past me so I could do a double-take.

I love his eyes. And his hair. It's very pretty.
I love your story idea, too. Angels (even fallen ones) completely catch my interest. You'll have to tell me more about it sometime. xD

Thank you I wanted to approach fallen angels from a more human perspective...they always seem to be portrayed as either pure evil or in a way that borders on pornography. Nico's kind of like my kid at this point haha

Thanks for the feedback. I'm thinking the next version will be a group shot of Nico with the other 3 main characters. I have an idea for the composition so hopefully I'll be able to get something more finished in that version.

Nice use of cross hatching. You've done a great job with face proportions.

ThinkingInAngles In reply to VeilofMystery [2008-07-06 07:32:12 +0000 UTC]
Thank you The proportions were probably the most difficult part given that he's essentially a composite. The trouble with drawing someone who isn't real eh?

Very nice life like picture. The eyebrows and the irises of the eyes are very good. Personally I would smudge the crosshatching out with my thumb for a smoother look in the darker areas of the pic but thats probably just comes down to a matter of individual taste.

ThinkingInAngles In reply to IQ-Locus-154 [2008-07-05 06:13:00 +0000 UTC]
Thank you. I usually am a big time smudger when it comes to graphite, but with this one I was trying to experiment a little more with cross hatching. I think you're right though and the next version I'll likely go with my gut and give it a more blended look.
