Description
Another mad scientist who accidentally turned himself into an anthropomorphic animal hybrid. You'd think after so many scientists turned evil after a lab accident or experimenting on themselves (Man-Bat, Lizard, Mister Freeze, Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, the list goes on and on) that some kind of superhero OSHA was put in place, but apparently no.Doctor Anthony "Tony" Artois was a scientist who dreaded his own mortality and the oblivion that he felt all people were destined to succumb to. He spent years studying nature, hoping the key to unlocking human longevity must be hidden somewhere in the plant or animal kingdom. Eventually he started experimenting with Galapagos Tortoise DNA, reasoning that their long lives in both the wild and captivity meant they could have the traits he was looking for. Using himself as the guinea pig, he tested a serum based on the reptile's genetic makeup. It ended up having the unintended (but totally foreseeable for a comic book) result of mutating him into a tortoise/human hybrid. His mind warped by the process, Doc Tortoise (as he was now calling himself) visits all sorts of grand elaborate schemes on unsuspecting humanity. While his ultimate goal IS trying to extend humans lifespans, his methods of going about it are heavily questionable AT BEST. He'll try anything from releasing a gas over a crowded metropolitan area to turn people into tortoise hybrids like him, freezing a city in a time bubble to keep people from ever aging, to really going off the rails and opening up time portals to unleash dinosaurs because he's convinced if he creates enough random time paradoxes humanity will survive forever in self fulfilling temporal loops. Needless to say, he'd probably benefit from some serious therapy and psych meds. The little flying face next to him is his A.I. assistant; L.I.Z.
