Hesitantly, Thorn cut through the tape which sealed the box shut, unveiling a small folder along with a letter near the top. After opening the letter, Thorn began to read the text, and what he saw made his entire body slump as if the life had been removed from him.  Although he wanted to stop reading, he couldn’t rip his eyes from the page as tears began to quiver at the edges of his eyes.  “I-I...I need a minute...excuse me.” croaked Thorn, his voice barely above a whisper as he rose from the couch and exited through the door.

Rune got up as well confused at her tamer’s behavior and was about to follow him but stopped as she felt a paw on her shoulder.  She turned around to see it was her sister’s, who held Thorn’s letter in her other paw as she read it quietly.  An air of electrifying suspense and horror gripped the room as Jade closed her eyes in sorrow.

“What…..what does the note say?” Asked Nate lowly as he looked towards Jade with concern in his eyes.  Although he and Thorn didn't always get along, he couldn't help the feeling of anxiety welling up inside him.

“It’s from Thorn’s boss at the Digimon Defence Department...It says Thorn’s parents were killed in a drunk driving accident,”  spoke Jade softly, her voice barely above a whisper as Rune covered her mouth in shock.

Repressed memories of her own mother getting eviscerated before her suddenly flooded Rune’s mind as her own eyes began to well up with tears.  “N-no, it’s not possible.” she whimpered, her ears falling back in sorrow as her tail dropped behind her. “It’s not fair.”

“No…” Exclaimed Nate angrily, driving the bottom side of his fist into the table as his head sunk to his chest. "Why does everything have to go badly? It seems like the moment we get ahead, something else brings us down."

“I-I should follow him.” stated Rune softly, her heart crushed as she slowly staggered towards the door.  But as she opened it and looked beyond, she realized Thorn was gone.  Turning back inside, Rune rushed past the group as her tears began to flow freely.  She didn’t care what they thought of her, she could one weep as the familiar sting of loss gripped her heart.  Upon reaching the bedroom, she threw herself upon the bed, curling up into a protective ball which she used to keep herself from freezing back in Radiance.
.
“D-Damn it...damn it all," muttered Nate, his mind a swirl of emotions as his body felt as if it had been drained of vigor and energy.

Jade sighed quietly to herself, her mind deep in thought as she contemplated the entire situation.  Although she had never lost someone who was close to her, she could partly feel what her sister was experiencing but was unsure how to comfort her.  Deciding it best to try and talk to her newly found sister one on one, Jade headed quietly back to the bedroom as Rika shot Renamon an awkward glance.

Jade slowly opened the door to uncover her sister in a pitiful ball, her fur unkept and her body quivering.  Although she didn’t know Thorn very much or his parents, the loss clearly upset her sister, and she was determined to do something about it.  “Hello? Rune? It’s me, Jade.” she started before immediately regretting her choice of words. “Great, my sister is heartbroken and here I am introducing myself.” panicked Jade as she crept towards her weeping sister.

Rune didn’t say anything, nor did she change her position.  Instead, she continued to bury her head into her fuzzy thighs as she clutched her tail in grief.

Sitting down beside her sister’s head, Jade gently began to scratch behind the dark vixen’s ear in an attempt to soothe her.  “Great, I accidentally kissed Thorn last night and now I’m petting my sister...Rune must think I’m a freak.” contemplated Jade to herself in concern as Rune opened her watery eyes.

“T-thanks.” murmured Rune softly, looking up at her sister with an unfittingly pathetic gaze.  She then closed them, permitting her sister to continue scratching and petting her head before looking up after a few minutes.  “Jade?  Why do bad things always seem to happen to me?  It seems like every time something good happens, something terrible follows.”

Jade thought about it for a moment, her mind coming up blank. “I-i don’t know Rune, I’m sorry,” she admitted, withdrawing her paw as Rune rose up to a sitting position.  “Is there anything I can do to help you or make you feel better?” offered Jade, completely out of her element as her sister dried her many tears.

Rune thought for a few moments in silence before clearing her throat, “How can I...is there anyway...do you know how I can cheer up Thorn?” stumbled Rune for a few seconds before finally choking out the words from her sore throat.

Jade pondered for a second before allowing a small grin to cross her face. “I know he always enjoys it when you snuggle with him and give him attention,” answered Jade, not revealing that she had been watching them from her portals.  “Maybe you spend some alone time with him?”

“But, how can I do that if we are staying here at Rika’s?” continued Rune, her mind still clouded by her sorrow.

“Why don’t you and Thorn rent a place somewhere to stay at? That way it will be just the two of you.” smiled Jade, trying her best to come up with a solution to cheer up her sister.  “It could be a surprise.  I’ll help you move all your bags and everything too.”

“Really?  Thanks, that’s actually a pretty good idea.  Maybe I could groom my fur and use some perfume to make myself sexy for him?” added Rune, braving a small smile to her lips as ideas began to present themselves.  “Thanks, Jade.” blushed Rune as she recomposed herself and finished wiping away her scattered tears.

“Of course, Rune. I don’t like to see you sad.” smiled Jade as she helped Rune to her feet before they started to collect their bags.  After everything was gathered, the two dark sisters exited into the living room where Nate, Rika, and Renamon where quietly discussing the drama that had just taken place.

“Death….the worst thing to ever happen to ya…” Nate murmured as his hand was on his mouth.

“Indeed….we’ve dealt with Death many times….especially with the D-Reaper...Beelzemon.” Renamon spoke up as she rested a hand on Nate’s shoulder to comfort him.

“No, death is not the worst to happen to you...believe me.” added in Jade as she and Rune walked past them to the door.  But instead of simply leaving, Rune turned around and faced Nate and Rena.

“Th-thank you,” stated Rune ask she looked Nate directly in the eye. “You’ve been a good friend, both of you...goodbye.” she finished quickly, leaving before she had a chance to tear up again.

“W-wow…,” stuttered Nate, his mind still trying to process the strange behavior of the normally hostile Renamon.

“What?” Asked Rika with a raised eyebrow as she gave Nate a look of confusion. “what is it?”

“She said we were good friends.” Replied Nate with a soft smile, reflecting inwardly at all the adventures and moments which the group had shared.  As Rune and Jade carried out their stuff, Nate had a feeling that he might not ever see the two vixens again.

Rune and Jade then left their awkward friends behind and began to scour the city in search of everything they needed to possibly cheer up Thorn.  Although Rune didn’t speak a word of Japanese, Jade was fairly fluent, enough to get by and explain to the majority of the shopkeepers that they weren’t cosplayers or going to try and eat them.

Meanwhile, Thorn had begun to run throughout the city, his mind disregarding that he didn’t know the language or where he was; focusing only on the tragedy of his recent loss.  His heart wept in loss as his lungs heaved shallow breaths and his eyes blurred with tears which he occasionally wiped away only to have them reappear not long after.  His body burned with pain as he pushed himself faster, harder, more desperate until his sorrow caused him to trip, sending him tumbling into a pile of garbage in an ally.  There, amidst the garbage and filth of society, Thorn screamed, cursing his life and the cruel world which had taken so much from him.

Attempting to rise to his feet, his spirit roaring with defiance, Thorn’s legs collapsed under him, his body spent the next two hours of practically nonstop running.  As his body broke, so did his spirit as he was slowly reduced to a sitting position against the alley wall.  He didn’t remember how long he stayed like that, nor did he care.  It was only after his phone began to vibrate with a text did his mind snap back to the real world.  Slowly bringing it out of his pocket, he noticed that it was from an unknown number, but it sounded much like Rune and was addressed by her at the bottom.  “So she got us a hotel huh?  I might as well head over there.” he sighed, returning his phone to his pocket before straightening himself up as to appear somewhat presentable.

Meanwhile, Rune and Jade had finished their preparations for operation, “Cheer up”, which they both thought was a cheesy, but a fitting title for what they were trying to do.  Jade had assisted Rune with combining lavender oil into her fur, something which they had both enjoyed.  Dinner had also been purchased along with a variety of other items which they reckoned might be helpful, such as shampoo, toiletries, and other personal items.  They had also purchased Rune a collar, something which Jade had insisted Thorn would think looked super cute and sexy on her.  Although Rune hadn’t been so sure about it at first, it actually turned out to be more comfortable than she imagined and she hoped that Jade was right about it.  Jade had also got her a leash, but Rune refused to wear it, not wanting to come off as kinky to her sister, though she secretly planned to wear it while greeting Thorn after Jade had departed.

Once Jade had finished getting Rune all dolled up, she informed her sister that she needed to report back to her father, Abather, but would try to keep in touch.  The two sisters shared one last final goodbye hug before Jade opened up a small rift to the Digital World and entered it.  Rune watched the strange glowing green portal shrink until it disappeared altogether.  Letting out a long sigh, Rune sat down on the edge of the couch to wait for Thorn to arrive.

It took Thorn almost an hour to finally navigate his way to the hotel Rune had told him, barely making it before the battery on his phone which he was using for navigation died.  He walked up the stairs to the room number Rune gave him, ignoring the awkward looks from an occasional passersby person.  After finding the door, Thorn gave a few raps on it with the back of his knuckles, which was promptly opened.  Thorn’s jaw fell open as he looked upon his beloved Digimon who had decided to put the leash on.

But before Thorn could say anything, Rune rushed forward and embraced her tamer with love, not caring that he smelled like filthy trash.  She nuzzled him tightly, her tail wagging happily behind her as Thorn’s gently slipped his arms around her.

“I’m so very sorry about your loss, Alpheus, but I am still here for you.” comforted Rune, using Thorn’s actual name as they shared a tender moment.  “Please don’t run off like that again, I want to share my life with you, the bad things as well as the good.” she sobbed as Thorn rested his head on her shoulder.

“T-thank you, Rune,” whispered Thorn, scratching his Vixen’s fluffy back with a hand before tenderly giving her forehead a kiss.  “I am sorry for scaring you, I kinda lost it and needed some time to myself,” admitted Thorn slowly as Rune started to sniff him.

“I don’t want to be rude, but you smell awful.” giggled Rune with a blush as Thorn let out an embarrassed laugh as well.

“Why don’t I get showered off first, then we continue?” suggested Thorn, not wanting to ruin all the work Rune had done for him because of his stench.

“Sure, but make it quick, alright?” she giggled in reply, giving him a playful tap on the nose with a claw before sauntering over to the king sized bed on the other side of the room.  She held her tail slightly up, giving the young man a teasing view of her beautifully toned butt before laying down provocatively on the sheets.

After watching his beautiful vixen, Thorn hurried to the bathroom where he took the fastest shower of his life while still taking time to clean himself thoroughly.  Then, once he had changed into a fresh tank top and shorts, he made his way to the bed where Rune was patiently waiting.  “Better now?” he smirked as Rune patted the space next to her with her paw, beckoning him over.

“Much better.” She smiled, snuggling up to his backside as he laid down beside her.  “I know you’re heart’s going to be hurting for awhile, but I’m here for you.”  she comforted, nuzzling her muzzle softly against his neck before resting it there.  “You were the only one I really had until Jade whom I could trust and…” she sniffled, not wanting to cast another spell of sorrow across them.

Shifting around so they were face to face, Thorn gently brushed Rune’s bangs from before her, allowing him a better look into her eyes.  “Rune, you are the only one I have left.  Everyone else doesn’t care or is gone.” he started, resting his forehead against hers as he closed his eyes.  “It hurts, it cuts me to my core, but as long as you are by my side, I know we can get through it.  Together, we can do anything we put our minds too. Right?”

“Of course, together,” whispered Rune, her own eyes closing as her hands slipped behind her tamers back and they embraced.  They shared the precious moments together, their souls connecting in a way in which only lovers can, dancing and swirling together with their hearts beating in rhythm.

It was in this perfect harmony that they drifted off to sleep, only to be brought back to the sorrow of reality as Thorn’s phone began to ring from the nightstand from where it was charging.

Letting out an annoyed, drawn-out sigh, Thorn reached over and answered it, giving a quick “Hello?” as a greeting.

“Greetings to you as well, Specter Thorn.” came the familiar voice of Director Kotch from the other side of the line.  “I am sorry to bother you, especially after the loss of your parents, but I figured you might want to hear this.” started the Director as Thorn propped himself up in bed as Rune listened into the conversation.  “As I said in my letter, your parents were killed by a drunk driver by the name of Joseph Bennett on their way back from their medical convention, however, I recently learned that Joseph is the son of a rather rich business executive.  Because of his father’s wealth, the entire incident was covered up and the young man got off scot-free.”

Upon hearing this, Thorn’s anger flared, his heart racing with anger as Rune’s face gave a disgusted upon hearing the atrocity.  “You’re telling me, the prick who killed my parents...is…” stopped Thorn, unable to finish his sentence before the Director took over.

“That is correct.  However, it has recently come to our attention that William Bennett, Joseph’s father, has been conducting some rather lucrative business deals with foreign nations.  Normally, I would assign this task to a more experienced agent, but I believe this contract belongs to you.”

“You mean…” tried Thorn once more, glancing towards Rune who shared a similar look of disbelief.  “He’s mine?”

“Correct.  As soon as you get back from escorting the Japanese asset back home, this contract will be yours.  You can do whatever you wish to the boy and his father, but you must make it look like an accident.  Do you understand?” informed Director Kotch as a satanic grin slowly grew across Thorn’s face, thoughts of revenge swarming through his mind.

“Of course, Director.  I’ll head back as soon as possible to fulfill the contract.” agreed Thorn, greatly looking forward to his next mission.  He then hung up the phone before turning to Rune, alive with a new fire which both excited and slightly unnerved her.  “It looks like we have some more work to do, but why don’t we enjoy ourselves a bit longer?” smiled Thorn, putting down his phone before laying on top of his partner.

“Sounds good.” she giggled, putting her furry legs around his as they started to lay passionate kisses across one another.  Although Rune didn’t necessarily care for killing, she didn’t dislike it either, rather she wanted to avenge her tamer’s parents and all the pain which accompanied it.  Besides her sister, Rune only cared about her lover and would do whatever was necessary to make sure they were happy together, even if that meant burning those who stood in their way to ash.

I haven't read it yet, sorry. Had a collage math exam today and I was freaking out about it too much to have stopped and read it yet, plus a project for Friday this week.

I'll try to get around to it in this week, though.

(Finally got around to reading this chapter and I must honestly say; I. Am. Impressed. Really, your penmanship had improved tremendously, and there are barely any spelling or grammar errors. Quite frankly, this could be your best work yet. )

"I... I don't know what to say... We're all sorry for your lose, Thorn." -Alicen

"Yeah... Losing family is... It's just too much for some..." -TC

"*Ahem*... I know this might not be the appropriate time, and I know I tend to come off as a bit of a hopeless romantic, but... Rune, truly I can not think of a more radiant sight as you dabbing your hair with lavender. How the purple must have glimmered in your chaos black hair like amethyst stars..." -Kaiber

<>

"Something troubling you, dark one? Your suspiciously quite for once..." -Blitz

A pause. "Perhaps..." he replied after a while. "Something about this seems... off to me."

"Hmm? How do you mean?" -Blitz

"Think about it. Thorn's boss, the unofficially head of "Murderers'R'us", sends him a message that his parents died in a car accident whilst he was over sea's, before shortly there after informing him that the one allegedly responsible had his dad cover it up and was now his prime targets." -Skarr

"What are you implying?" -Blitz

"Let me put it this way; Agents, especially those tasked with murdering rivals, find that they are more determined and successful in killing their targets if it has been made personal to them. Now who is to say certain events weren't orchestrated to deliberately make it personal for an agent, especially a new one yet to have taken first blood...? Shouldn't be too hard to pull off if the one behind it is the head of a black-Ops assailant division..." -Skarr

(Thank you   I did this one mostly by myself, so it was a bit easier to write.  Though I'm a bit surprised at the response it's gotten. My chapters normally get a decent amount of views, but this one isn't doing that well.)

"It...was a difficult experience, and it certainly changed both Rune and myself."-Thorn

"...The oil wasn't purple, but it did make my fur rather shiny."-Rune

"You forget that I had already killed before this, once at my old school, and also with Vulture, not to mention the other Digimon Rune and I slew together."-Thorn

"Oh... You used shampoo... The text had me under the impression that you had used actually lavenders buds. Fresh ones are far better in both scent and touch then just lab made extract, and their oils are very useful for anxiety in their raw form..." -Kaiber

"I meant an actual, assigned kill that wasn't self defense. Nevertheless, I still think there's something more to this then just some rich boy cover up. Didn't you mention something a year or so back, about having gained control of the organization afterwards for some reason?" -Darth Skarr

"It was more of a pure oil extract than anything else, we couldn't exactly find a flower shop.  Though, I will a flower in my hair from time to time when Thorn and I are having our dates."-Rune

(I don't want to spoil anything, so you'll have to wait and find out .  Though, things have changed from my original idea quite dramatically.)
