  • Other Names: Marine beaver

  • Ancestor: American beaver

  • Diet: Shellfish, aquatic plants

  • Habitat and range: Eastern North American coastlines

The Marine Beaver, or Castocetus ("beaver-whale") is a specialized aquatic omnivore native to the American coastline, from Nova Scotia to the Island of Rhode. They use their powerful paddle-like tail to propel themselves through the water in search of food; see-grass and shellfish. Their strong rodent jaws and teeth are powerful enough to shatter the shells of most oysters, clams, mussels, and barnacles. Their long mustache of whiskers help them sense movement and predators, for a plump rodent makes a fine meal for many hungry predators, including Bear-rats, Dogwhales, and Skinwalkers. Both their size and lifestyle is similar to that of a Harbor Seal, resting in large groups by the shore out of the reach from most predators.
