To avoid bloodshed, foxes have developed a series of rituals to replace actual violent behaviour.
With a varity of vocalizations, like their very stereotypical ‘gekkering’ and dominant or submissive postures, they make their statements very clear.
Instead of deploying their sharp teeth and claws, they rear up on their hind legs, lay their paws on the opponents shoulders, put down their ears and tail, and face each other with wide open mouths.
These wide mouths agape leave little to the imagination:
‘Take a gooood look at these very sharp teeth, before considering another battle.
I’m being very friendly now, but the very next time we meet, I might as well use ‘em!

It's pity that I have to wait a month to suggest this photo for a DD...

A stunning photo of this interesting ritual. It's quite clever of the foxes to do this instead of fighting in earnest. The photo itself is well done. You captured the two foxes perfectly and the background is wonderful blurred. A great photo.

Cool photo! I like the lighting that makes the foxes glow, and the couple little bits of fur in the air around them. It enhances the feeling of fur-flying competition in the photo. I like the details in the description, too, offering more insight into what's actually happening in the photo. Great action shot!

Amazing image - I love the lighting and how very healthy both foxes look - and really interesting description of their behaviour. You are lucky to be able to follow their lives; thanks for sharing your lovely photos and your knowledge with us.

One says "wa-pa-pa-pa-pow!" And the other one says, "son of a buscuit eater eddy, quit singing that song!"

I'm going to pretend that the opponent with the more harsher morning breath wins.

They both have their eyes closed though. How are they gonna know who has the better chompers?

I have to say foxes are the most funny and stupidest animals I know when it comes to FIGHTS! XD
At first they "bark" and yell at each other.
Then they have some very short physical confrontation.
Then both foxes roll on their backs, next to each other, both of them having all four in the air, both yelling like crazy
Lovely photo! In the Czech republic we have a quote "they fight so much that there is hair flying everywhere" and fits this shot so much
