Meet Raymond, the modified navy blue Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST engine. Raymond was built in 1943 during the middle of World War II and was among the first of his kind to see service. He received his baptism of fire when nine V-1 flying bombs came raining down on him as he was returning from dropping off supplies for the front in London. He survived the barrage and continued on with his service after the war ended. During the early 1950s, Raymond underwent a much needed refit and his boiler was further strengthened. This refit also included improvements on his speed, increasing it from 50mph to 75mph, making him unusually faster than his fellow siblings. Before the start of 1964, Raymond was purchased by an unnamed railway that mainly used steam engines instead of diesels and remained in that railway's service until a horrific event in the late summer of 2014 that resulted in 70% of the population that lived by and on the railway either dead or infected. Of the 36 total engines that worked on the railway, 11 died. The other engines survived, including Raymond, who was heavily traumatized by the event and the loss of his friends. He and the survivors escaped the railway after 40 days of fighting for survival. Raymond and the surviving engines were worried that they would be scrapped, but were surprised when Sir Topham Hatt purchased them, as he needed some extra help with upcoming festivities on Sodor. Raymond and the survivors were thankful for being given another chance and have worked with the NWR and Sodor ever since. Nevertheless, Raymond and the survivors look back on their ordeal and paid a moment of silence for their fallen friends every day.
