Description Lore
When the railways still were young Northey’s locomotive production facilities were undeveloped leading to it being more expensive to buy locally built engines than to import them from England. This led to there being a large amount of British built Victorian engines on Northey of which 0-6-0 and 4-4-0 tender engines were the two largest groups. In the late 1880s the crown placed a huge tariff on steam locomotives in an effort to bolster the local engine building industry, how effective a strategy this was has been debated but it did increase the number of locally built engines. SJR engine №1066 Elizabeth was a British built engine ordered in the 1860s by a private railway which was absorbed by the SJR in the late 1890s, №1066 was originally slated to be scraped in 1914 but the war led to her service lifted being prolonged enough to be selected for preservation by the Northeyan National Railway Museum, making her one of the select few British built engines to enter preservation on Northey.
