Description
The Key - by Tigerfaceswe"A stone..."
Tahu's voice grumbled, his voice rumbling as violently as the Mangai volcano itself.
"All this searching, all these hardships to find those masks in order to fight Makuta, and all you can give me is a stone!?"
"Not just any stone, Toa."
Vakama interjected calmly.
"What you hold in your hand is a Makoki stone."
"A stone is a stone is a stone!"
Tahu interrupted impatiently.
"What am I to do with this useless scrap piece!?
How do you expect me to use it against the Makuta!?"
"It is simple."
Vakama responded, ever as calm as before.
"It is a key to the Mangaia; the very lair of Makuta."
"Well, why didn't you say so from the beginning, then?"
Tahu spoke up again, still as impatient but now suddenly elated.
"If this is what I need to enter Makuta's domain, then I shall go."
He stood up, ready to turn and leave.
"And yet, there is a vital piece you are missing."
Vakama was the one to interrupt now.
"What?
What is it?"
Tahu demanded.
---
"Wise Nuju says that while this key is indeed a pathway to the Makuta, it cannot be used in its own."
Matoro carefully stuttered.
Kopaka looked puzzled at the wise Turaga and his translator.
First he learned this was the key to Makuta but now he is told it cannot be used.
"Explain."
he said with a voice so chilling that it could freeze solid rock.
Matoro took a careful step back.
"See here,"
he pointed.
"At the letters on this stone.
What does it read?"
Kopaka read it carefully.
KOPAKA.
Puzzled, he turned his face up again.
"That is...my name."
"Just so."
Matoro continued.
"And much like this is only one stone, you are only one Toa.
At this very moment, the other Toa are recieving their own Makoki stones, each with a carving of their own names.
Nuju says that just like how these stones together make up a whole key to Makuta's lair, only together can you Toa succeed in defeating his shadow."
---
"Why should I put my trust in any of the others?"
Tahu snorted.
"None of them listen to what I have to say.
Least of all Kopaka."
Vakama shook his head.
"And yet, you have all gone to great lengths on this journey to help one another out.
You have helped save Matoran together, faught against Makuta's beasts and terror, and even found masks for one another.
Would you have succeeded in all of these achievements on your own?"
Tahu grew silent.
There was truth in what the old Turaga was saying.
---
"Only through unity can you Toa even fathom to defeat the Makuta."
Matoro pleaded.
"You need them, and they need you.
We need you."
Kopaka thought back, to all those times the other Toa had come to his aid and vice versa.
How Pohatu had assisted him in finding his Kanohi Hau and trapped that Kane-Ra.
How he had saved Lewa from that Muaka, and how Lewa in turn had saved his life in that magma den in Ta-Wahi.
And despite how much he tried to ignore it, Tahu had despite all his flaws proven to be a capable leader.
Underneath all that impatient and loud rage lied the potential of a true Toa hero.
"Perhaps,"
Kopaka began.
"Perhaps, you are right, oh wise one."
---
"Go then, Toa!"
Vakama spoke.
"Your brothers await you at the great temple Kini-Nui.
May Mata Nui smile at the fortune of your quest."
Tahu grinned as he turned.
"And may I..."
he began.
"No. May we return victorious."

So, reading through the Wall of History website, I recalled there is no canon explanation of how the Toa Mata got their hands on the Makoki stones. I mean, lorewise, we know the Toa Metru/Hordika team got their hands on during the 2005-storyline, but since this is 2001 I thought it would only be logical to have an explanation for it be given; and so here it is - the Turaga giving the Toa the Makoki stones for the upcoming battle against the Makuta.
Particularly, I felt we needed to dwell further into the conflict between Tahu and Kopaka and how they would, at least temporarily, put their differences aside by the time they entered the Kini-Nui temple.
It's a bit fan-ficcy, but that's what happens when there's an information gap.
We are so close to the end game now, can you feel it?
Special thanks to for the editing of the Makoki stones.
