Memories are not enough
though they sometimes make me smile,
but if only I could have you back
for just a little while.
We’d take a drive with the windows open,
you’d be smiling in the breeze,
til you’d had enough
and curled up
and let your head rest on my knee.
Or perhaps, instead, we’d find some grass,
made warmest by the sun,
and nap there side-by-side
not needing anyone.
But if truth be told and I looked up
and saw you standing here,
I’d hold you tight and kiss your nose
and whisper in your ear.
I’d tell you that I love you,
you’re a good dog, you’re my friend;
I’d tell you that I miss you
and I’m not ready for the end.
I’d thank you for the time we spent,
though it felt like just a glance,
and then I’d say goodbye--
because I never got the chance.
