"It's been a long time. How have you been?"

I've been wanting to make this outfit for a while now, and I finally decided to finish it up to wear on Halloween and then to Stan Lee's Comikaze this Saturday. I love the Portal series, and I wanted to create a more generic outfit that Aperture Science test subjects would wear, similar to Chell's outfit but less feminine, and incorporating the best design aspects from each of the games.

There were several challenges, particularly with making the long fall boots, but I think it turned out really well. The portal gun is the customizable one, purchased from ThinkGeek. The coveralls are Red Kap brand, with pockets moved and added, and trim sewn on (thanks mom!). For the boots, I started with white Onguard PVC boots, painted the soles black, made some cuts at the top, and glued on sheets of EVA craft foam to create the design. The black straps are velcro. The springs ("velocity challenge braces") are aluminum, bent to the proper shape and painted, and then attached at the back of the boots with bolts and on the soles with screws. A thin piece of rubber is glued to the bottom of the spring on each heel. Turns out paint doesn't dry too well on PVC, so I may remake the boots later.

I'll likely be wearing this to more conventions in the future, so keep an eye out and continue testing!
