The Mystery Of Lift:
A Hopper's Journey
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reference and Research Log of Madrick Rabdon #234-A (Sep 22, 4587 A.D)
This material is a compilation of numerous and various observation of a third party observer into the mysterious world knwon as Lift. The information contained within is not complete at this time and information is still being gathered and obtained from various sources across the planet.
My name is Madrick Rabdon, celestrial explorer, researcher and represenitive of the planet Earth. I've been sent into the more the deeper reaches of the universe by my clients of the United Science Alliance of Cosmic Exploration (U.S.A.C.E) to explore the more unknown regions of the universe and galaxies beyond to observe the development of other worlds for research.
Using newly developed teleportaion technology utilizing partical slingshot theory which I will not get into at this time, I entered a galaxy system only labeled as A200-1B in my starchart database. After a few months in cyrogenic sleep, I was awoken after being alerted by ship sensors detecting a terestrial planet less than 500,000 km from my position. After intial scans and data crunching finding the atmosphere more than hospitable to at least human life, I descended from the main craft in the landing craft and began primilary observation in the upper atmosphere.
Early topography readings indicated signs of advanced signs of man, or close to man, made structures and possible civilization. And in the first few days of laying out the land, I caught many instances of seeing upright standing creatures walking around various biomes. Once my topography research was finished on Aug. 4 of 4587 A.D. I began observing the local fauna and flora. While I recorded countless terrabytes of observational data of the plant and animal life, I found most of my data inconclusive without samples. Knowing the risk of contact with the local creatures, I tried my best to find an isolated area to being first hand data collecting.
Landing in a realtively dense area of a jungle like forest, I began my first planetside readings and research. The local fauna I found seem to be similar to that found back home, though readings were spiking constantly as if the plants contained the power of a battery cell. This was quite fascinating to discover and just this alone would warrent a wide away of experiments to utilize such power sources. As I prepared my first samples to be returned to the main craft, I found my landing craft suddenly launched into the air, and thrown into dense brush behind me with a sickening thud of crushing metal. I quickly turned back to see that my craft had been toss by a huge monsterous pig creature which I couldn't even describe even in my most wildest nightmares.
As I stared down this creature, it almost seemed to lower it's hair browl and began to laugh in a gutteral harsh langauge I couldn't understand. I could tell that this monster wasn't interested in parlaying peacefully forcing me to draw my sidearm in defense. Seeing me draw a weapon, the creatures ears suddenly pointed back as it let out a sudden loud roar and began to charge me. Completely frozen in fear, I fell backwards over a root and dropped my sidearm. As I quickly gazed back towards my rushing attacker, all I could do is scream a barely audiable cry for help as I was about to be crushed by this hulking behemoth.
Suddendly another creature sideswiped the beast at a speed my eye couldn't catch. As if it has spring out the jungle itself, it managed to launch the beast into the side of a large tree, making a loud squeel in pain from the attack. I quickly turned back towards my sidearm as a scruffle ensued behind me, to scared to actually look back to see what the other creature was. Grabbing my sidearm, I immediately rushed to my now destroyed landing craft and hid behind it. I peeked out from over my craft and finally began to make out what was happening.
The creature who swooped in was...for a lack of better words...a giant rabbit like creature with armor that looked like it was made out of parts of a clock. Attacking the monsterous boar with constructed blade weapons it was struggling to keep balanced with it's opponent. For a few moments it kept jabbing into the side of the boars head as blood and flesh began to be ripped from it's side as both creatures grunted and screamed in languages I could not decipher. For a moment I was certain this rabbit would over come this monster until it was pushed onto ground. Suddenly the boar began to expand its mouth into the most frightening maw I've ever seen.
The rabbit immediately moved it's...hands...and tried it's hardest to keep the maw away from it's body, but it appeared he was losing the fight. As the boar roared angrily to bite, the rabbit suddenly turned to me and began shouting towards me in his language. For a few seconds I didn't know what to do, try to help this rabbit being from becoming hog chow or use the distraction to make an escape before the boar turned it's attention back to me. But as soon as our eyes caught contact with one another, I knew I couldn't leave the thing to such a cruel fate. Drawing my sidearm I began to fire widly into the boar, not knowing if it would even deter the beast or if it would end up killing us both.
As I fired wildly, the boar suddenly turned to me and roared defiantely. Somehow one of my shots struck the creature dead center of it's face, making it let out a short painful squeel before falling to the ground dead with a large thud. I dropped my sidearm and collapsed to the ground as the adrenline left my system. As I looked back towards the boars corpse the rabbit, though clearly exauhsted, shoved the large beast of it's body with it's feet and stood back up. It then cautiously approach me with it's blades out stretched.
As I began to regain my senses I realized that this rabbit appeared to be more human like than I precieved. In fact I began to relize that this creature was very tall and with human like arms and legs, wearing torn clothing underneath it's mechanical armor and most surprisingly...appeared to be female...though I'm omitting what characteristics lead me to such a conclusion.
She also appeared to be far more intelligent than I estimated as it got within arms reached, it kicked my sidearm to the side and then pinned me against a tree with her foot which was about the size of my chest. She pointed it's bladed claws right in my face, leaving me with nothing but a look of terror on my face as it made a closer observation on my face. Her face itself was definately more like the rabbits on earth, except for the more human like cheekbones, chin, and forehead. It's eyes on the other hand had much smaller puppils compared to the rest of the eye mass, as well as it's rabbit like nose and buck teeth sticking out of it's mouth. It honestly would be cute if she wasn't threatening to cut my face in if I moved.
She then lowered it's blades away from me and began to speak again in it's langauge. Seeing as I had no idea what it was saying, all I could do was visably shrug my arms and say "I can't understand you". She keept repeating the sentences again and again, with increasing frustration growing in her tone only for me to give the same response. Finally she removed her foot from my chest and turned away from me. Incrediably she appeared to pull out some kind of long range communication device and began speaking into it. I couldn't hear anything from the device itself but she appeared to be hearing something or someone from it. She finishes her conversation and places the device back among here clothing.
She then returns to me and forcibly turns me on my stomach on the ground. "Hey take it easy, didn't I just save your ass?", knowing she didn't know what I was saying anyway but for some reason she seemed to smile at that reaction. Tieing my arms together with some kind of tough thin rope and then equiping some sort of mechanical splint along her legs, she then picked me up with the ease I would picking up a bag of groceries. She slinged me over her shoulders and then amazingly launches us both high into the sky. My reaction is as follows, "HOLY %$^$! YOU'RE GOING TO KILL US! WHERE ARE WE GOING!? WATCH OUT FOR THAT TREE!". Which of course only fell on her long deaf ears.
I relized in transit that I needed to remember as much as I could as we hopped along knowing I would need to return to my craft at some point in order to report back to HQ my findings. And by my luck, there was already enough to report to make me lead scientist for decades to come. Admitdly after my complaints subsided, this rabbit was pretty graceful. Each landing was as soft as driving over a road bump and the incredible heights she leaped from while holding me no less gave me a good eagle eye view of the land we were traveling through.
Lush expansion of jungle with some rocky outcrops stretch as far as I could see. Though the weather was far more cooler than a typical tropical climate. I suspect that could be from the the unsual energy readings the flora contained within giving forth exceptional growth. I also started to notice that the light from the star I've seen as not faded despite changing orbit since I arrived. Something I would later attribute to the fact that there are actually two stars orbiting this planet. Finally I noticed we passed a few primative dwellings on our way to our destination, noting more rabbit creatures giving gaze to the strange creature passing by, I.E. me.
Finally the ride ends in a loud thump as my transportation reaches a particularly imposing gray metal tower. Even so I was wise not to struggle under my captors arms, not that it would matter if I did manage to escape seeing how much ground one these rabbits could cover or the distance back to my destroyed craft. She approached a large featureless metal doorway and stops just in front of it. Suddenly a small beam of light passes to and fro around us from somewhere above the door. Once it dissappears I hear the grinding of large gears as the door slowley ascends upwords.
I should mention that I'm facing from her backside so I'm only able to make quick glances backwards, but otherwise facing the ground. I then hear the approach of a lot of tiny footsteps approaching us. Then to my astoundment, a bunch of well clothed earth sized rabbits with some odd looking hair and features enter my view. I hear the chatter between my captor and these new denizens, still not understanding a word, while at the same time being stared at by a bunch of curious onlookers. I try my best to not make any direct eye contact, mostly out of embarassment.
Suddenly all the small rabbits immediately dart back towards to the tower and out of my view as a loud bark is made from some elder sounding creature I cannot see. And I find myself being taken inside, watching as the door passes in front of me and slowly closes.
Once inside I immediately notice that unlike outside of the tower, the interior is far more ornate than I anticipated. We pass by many things I did not expect at all like well constructed corridors of metal shined to perfection. The decorations I noted included carpeting, drapes, furnature of fine and almost regal looking material. Even more surprising where displays of art along the walls. Portaraits of these beings and scenes depicting themes of agriculture, war, landscapes and what I assume to be some of their cities. There were even pictures of...well of a tasteful adult nature but much like paintings on Earth. I feel a sharp tug from my captor as we pass by a few of them, probably not a fan of wandering eyes.
We soon approach a large ornate door that opens slowely to a sound of commotion of more of these denizens of this world. As soon as we enter the commotion almost dies as suddenly every eye in the room begins to gaze at me. And it wasn't just these rabbit creatures that where here either. I saw some snake like creatures standing as tall as the rabbits with their entire bodies erect. What was odd about the ones I saw were a few that were handling objects with their tail ends as dexteriously as a jewler while still maintaing their balance to meet their rabbit neighbors.
Another set of creatures look sort of like jackals but these creatures where almost human like sculptures of muscle and fine clothing. Clothing made of metalic red like cloth drapping arround them like a robe. Shockingly, they seemed to be missing not only their ears typical of most Earthen dogs but they also lacked a visable mouth. I was incredibly unnerved as for a few seconds I caught eyes with one that visibly gave a very cold glare. I guess I could've been caught by far worse creatures, those boars of course being a death sentence though not knowing what these rabbits had in store for me.
The last group of critters that really surprised me, among the others of noticed that day, were strange albino creatures that I can only best describe as flying jellyfish. But unlike the sea dwelling kind, these ones appeared to have four solid appendages jutting from the bottom of their decent sized bodies. Their body itself was a white dome of featurless skin with the exception of four beady black eyes in front along with a small mouth that opened and closed rythmically. Finally hovering around the top of the creatures body was a thin purple sheet that at first I thought was clothing but looking closer was actually attached to the jelly by a very thin appendage from the back of their body.
Just then a loud booming voice is heard throughout the room and the crowd goes silent. my captor kneels down, along with the rest of the crowd. I glance behind me and catch a glimps of who made their entrance. It was another of the small rabbits only this one was clothed in far more ornate clothing. The clothing itself was pure white with blue and gold stiching ornately decorating throughout it's clothing. The robe drapped some very long tassles to the ground from which it stood...but then I realized these kind of rabbits were tiny compared to my captore and my mind boggled that it was standing taller than my captor.
My captor rises to meet this leader and then slings me on my feet in front of it with one hand on my binding and the other on the back of my neck. The robbed one leans in close to me, trying to discreen the strange creature in front of it. It places it's tiny human like paws on my face and turns my head from side to side. It isn't particularly gentle as it pokes hard against my cheeks and pulls my nose and ears, which seemed to amuse it much to my discomfort. The robbed one then draws back and speaks to my captor in their tounge. This seems to go on for about a few minutes with noticble tones of curiosity and alert in their tones.
Suddenly the robbed on raises it's left hand in a halting gesture and then intensely stares at me. I feel a strange woozey feeling at that moment and almost feel like passing out. Then out of nowhere, I hear a voice speaking to me. "Who are you? Where do you hail from" the voice said. In a daze I respond, "Who am I? Who are you?". It responds, "I am the being you stand in front of. Now answer me, who are you?" I respond again, "My name is Madrick Rabdon, I am a scientist from another world". The voice says, "Another world? Hmm...yes, you certainly do not look like any other citizen from any civilization of Lift". "Lift? Is this what this world is called?".
"Hold your thoughts, stranger. I will be the one asking the question here" the voice responds again. "Why have you come to this world?" the voice said. "I represent a collective of scholars from my homeworld seeking to advance our knowledge of the universe with our newly discovered technology of space travel. I only seek to research new stretchs of the universe peacefully and I came to your planet purely by chance", I answer.
The woozey feeling left me and I regain my immediate senses. I then realize I was no longer in the large room I was once in but now in a small room with a strip of light on top facing four featureless gray walls and flat door with a small semicircle hole. I then quickly notice I was restrained to the ground by plastic like restraints around my legs, though strangley my arms were free. Though I couldn't seem to move from my spot as some force was holding me in place. I guess now I was a prisoner to these advanced alien rabbit beings.
Research Log of Madrick Rabdon #234-B (Sep 23, 4587 A.D)
With nothing to do, I pondered my situation as to what I could possibly do to earn my freedom. Having no idea how this society of these techonologically advanced beings even functions, I wondered if I'd ever be able to get back to my ship, let alone back to my own world. After hours of going through as many possible scenarios how to deal with the situation, I grew tired and slowely fell asleep.
Scientists aren't know to write down their dreams in their research, being simple cognitive playbacks of the days events, but I feel that this particular one was worth mentioning. In my dream I found myself standing before a large giant structure of crystal blue ice. The bitter chill felt unnevering as it did feel real to me. I then notice a dull glow in the middle that began to grow more and more brighter. Suddenly a tunnel began to form, melting a large enough path for me to walk towards the center.
Driving by the cold and curiosity I venture steadily to the center as the light grew birghter and the air around me grew warmer. In the center of this massive icicle I saw a strange prisim gem that emitted a strange blue hue and intense beams of light around it's structure. It was mesmeroizing to say the least of it and felt a need to study this gem closer. As I reached out towards it a voice from behind suddenly spoke to me, saying, "You do not know what power you're percieving at this moment is". I turned around slowely and see a small robbed figure that seemed to be one of the smaller rabbits I've encountered on this planet.
It's robe reached only down to it's exposed black legs, brown and ragged held together by bits of rope. I tried to discreen his face but it was facing downward and only puffs of it's breath escaped from it's hood.
Again he spoke, "You do not know what power you're percieving at this moment is". I respond, "What do you mean? What is this thing? And who are you?". "I am known as the Scholar of the South Pole. What you see before you is known as the Blue Tear, a rare and very powerful gem in all of Lift. With it's power it brings life to the entire planet but can also bring unimaginable destruction", it tells me.
I ask, "Why am I being showed visions of this powerful gem in my dreams". The robbed figure moves slightly closer to me and says, "Because you are one of the two beings destined to bring a new age of hope to all of Lift". "But I am not from Lift, I'm not even from this part of your known Universe, why would a complete alien be needed to accomplish this task instead of any other creature on this planet?", I ask. The robe figure looks upwards to me, showing me a near black facade except for two intense blue irises glowing from withen. "Exactly because you are not from Lift, for reasons you do not understand yet". "Well then tell me why so" I ask out of annoyance.
The figure lowers it's head again and replies, "You are not well known here on Lift enough to be given that answer. You do not understand it's ways and it's people. Only after you have learned of the importance of this world to it's people will you understand the answer you seek. But first you must prepare yourself and seek out the inner power of Lift. Partake of it's energy with the other fated one and you will be closer to bringing renewl to our dying world".
"Wait a minute, what do you mean dying?" I ask. But then everything around me starts fading out and my vision goes dark.
My senses return as I begin to awaken, awoken by the sound of my cell door being unlocked. I turn towards the door and to my surprise see my captor again. This time she was wearing a more leather like outfit that seem to be undergarments for a suit of armor, fairly polished and much more fitting to her form. I move back towards the wall as much as my restraint could allow me to move. I could see in her hand some kind of collar and knew that I was about to be restrained like a dog. Frozen in fear, she approaches me just as she did back at the crash sight. Again she places one of her feet on my chest, but subtly much softer than the first time. She grabs the back of my head gently as she places the collar with ease in my terror like state. She then takes a small controler of some kind out and fiddles around with it.
Suddenly a wave of dizzyness envelopes me, causing me to lose conciousness for a moment. Soon I can hear the clamoring of a thousand voices ringing thoughtout my head. The strain is almost unberable. "Is this the first of many experiments these creatures have in store for me? Will I eventually be disected and placed on display like a butterfly collection or stuffed animal back home? Will I even survive this?" I can barely hear my own thoughts as the voices get louder and louder. For a moment, I thought for sure I was going to die from my head exploding from being occupied by thousands of people shouting...
...But then the voices began to fade. Slowly it grows more quiet and I begin to calm down. Silent, and more silent before another moment of blackness. I then awaken again, still quite dizzy and disoriented. As I struggle to regain my senses, all the voices I was hearing were all silenced, save one. I could barely make it at first, but as the room stops spinning and I feel much more stable, it becomes a quite clear almost coo like voice of a woman. "Can you hear me?" It ask.
I then realized it was not a voice in my head speaking but someone in the room with me. Fully aware, I turned to see my captor kneeling down on the other side of the room. She repeats again, "Are you okay? Can you understand me?". In utter shock that for reasons beyond me that I could now understand my captor perfectly, in my own langauge no less, I nod my head in response. She repeats the same motion, asking, "What does this gesture mean?" I almost want to smack my face, realizing I wasn't dealing with my fellow man right now. I respond, "Yes I can understand you. Can you understand me?"
"We can now", she says. Implying that she was not alone as we were most likely being watched from the door behind here. I sit up and ask, "Where am I and why was I brought here?", in a clearly perturbed tone given the events that led me here. "You're in no position to ask such questions strange being, considering you're the one intruding on Empire territory. You might be a spy for all we know". Dumbfounded by her response I reply, "A spy? Really? What kind of spy saves the ass of the people he would be working against?" Her face sours at my response and pulls out the control device again, sending me into a much shorter but just as intense dizzy spell.
"My life or not, you're still an intruder and now I have to deal with you". I stumble back up against the wall and respond, "At least my people don't torture others we capture for just intruding, especially people we've never seen before". As if I struck a cord with her, her face frowns and she puts th control device down beside her. She almost sheepily replys, "I..I'm sorry. It's just that bringing you in has cause a bit of trouble for me and I'm concerned about what I am suppose to do with you".
"A bit of trouble?" I reply. I almost roll my eyes back at the statement but reply with, "If a creature like you were to visit where I was from, they roll out the red carpets for you with parades just for visiting".
"Why would your kind roll out red carpets for my kin? Is your planet unfit to walk on without protection?". Again as if an almost comical point had been missed I reply again, "I'll explain what it means some other time. Anyway, what do you mean your concern? Didn't those little psychics of your kind have any interest in me?
She sours her face again but does not reach for the control and says, "Do not speak ill of the Bouncers, they are our highly regarded leaders and we do not tolerate of anyone, alien or not, speaking ill of them. Do you understand?"
"Okay okay, settle down. I didn't mean to insult you or your people. But aren't they interested in studying me or something? I'm pretty sure I mentioned to them I was a scientist conducting research on your planet and..."
"AH HA! You are a spy!", cutting off my sentence.
"No no no, I mean peaceful research", I quickly stutter.
"We'll see soon enough. Anyway the Bouncers have conducted all the research they needed from you anyway. We've already assertained everything about you; your memories, you physiology, and all the data we can from you. We'll soon know what your true intentions are. I hope what you said is true, for your sake."
She rises up and the door behind her opens again as two more of her kind in full armor can be seen opening the door for her. She begins to walk out when I shout to her, "Wait! You said you know everything about me but you haven't called me by my name, so can I at least have that?"
She looks over her shoulder and says, "Very well, what is your name?".
"Madrick Rabdon".
"What an odd name for an odd creature", she reponds with a shrug.
As she leaves the room, she stops again before they close the door and says, "My name is Bunbomb, of the Bomber Clan, I hope this isn't our last meeting, creature".
"Well I hope you can remember my name next time, rabbit..."
She clearly let out a small chuckle before the door closes completely and once again I'm still a prisoner on an alien world. I only hoped to survive long enough to record what I've learned so far.
Research Log of Madrick Rabdon #235 (Sep 23, 4587 A.D)
My perception of time during my imprisonment becomes a little hazy at this point. I spent he first few days adjusting to this world's concept of day and night, in that night is almost non-existent. From what I can see from my cell through the tiny hole in the door was sun shine against another cell door. I noted from time the time the way it passed slowely into a late afternoon shade of light, slightly dimming for about two or three hours before growing brighter again as though it was morning.
Lift's Celestrial Order
In an unknown corner of the universe, afloat in a galxay of a million stars, exist the mysterious world of Lift. An unusal world, far from the one you may be familiar with. Orbited by two slow moving twin stars in almost eerie unison opposite of each other. And orbited by a moon moving in almost perfect perpendicular motion to it's celestrial twin brothers, making it the equator for Lift.
The stars bathe Lift in both perpetual day and dawn on one dimension of planet at all times. The only exception is the moon's path along the equator and it's two farthest poles. Along the equator, the moon travels faster along it's path from the gravitional pull of Lift and the twin stars. Because of this, Lift's moon constantly blocks the light from one star on either side. Lift's moon, being half the size of Lift itself, is the only source of allowing Lift to enter a night phase by blocking enough light from either star. Night however only last only but a few hours, in relation to Earth's perception of time, and only under the moon along the path of the equator.
The moon is a sight to see on the suface of Lift. Along it's path, when it's not blocking the path of either star, it's shines a faint orange glow during the day cycle and slowly turns redish violet during the dawn cycle. And when it enters the path of one of the stars it emits a whitish shimmer across it's surface before darkening into an orange, redish and violet hue and then going completely dark as it completely blocks the stars rays in an area around 3,000 miles. During it's dark phase, space itself open it's vastness to Lift, blanketed by a ballet of twinkling stars and swirling cosmic dust and debris in the farthest reaches one could see from the surface.
But it is at the opposite poles of Lift where the moon takes on the most pecular form. In the poles, where very little light shines from either star, the moon transforms into the one of the most gorgeous sights one can see on Lift. When the moon passes throught the poles, it does not darken the land below, as it does when it enters the path of the twin stars. But instead, it takes in both lights from each star and shimmers in a errie blue-green glow. For but a few hours, one pole is bathed in a aurora of light that cannot even be described by anyone on Lift.
The World of Lift
Lift itself, govenered by it's unsusual celestrial orchestra, is just as varied and unusual.
Lift is composed much like a sideways eaten apple core from it's face from orbit above. For your benefit, Lift will be describe by one side of it's planet as a circle. With the equator representing North and South and the land ending in West and East. That is not to say that the planet itself is equal on both sides, but such details are not relevent, at least for now in this story.
Lift itself is a vast continent stretching from one end to the other. Baked by the twin stars, most of the land is a vast sprawling desert of sand dunes and rocky outcrops. Most noticable to the West are a series of deep canyons, believed to be early oceans before they were dried up by the twin stars at some point. And to the East, deep caverness tunnels hollowed out by early seas and now relentless sand storms that ravage through them. Pockets of civilization can be found on either end but that is for another chapter.
However Lift is not just world of sand but flourishing life as well, thanks to the moon. Because of the moon's unique orbit along Lifts assumed equator, much cooler conditions from it and the poles allow the formation of vast oceans both sides of the planet from the North and South Poles. The most notable fertile areas is the land between the two oceans and along the coast lines surrounding the poles. The lands closer to the oceans are jungle like, with dense forests of tropical trees and marshes that dot the coast lines. While the land between are more vast plains surrounded by losely formed mountains that protect relatively large parts of the land from the ravages of the drier deserts beyond.
The oceans themselves are other worlds entirely themselves, The Northen Ocean has unique features created from the fragments of them moon. Jutting plateaus are found through the ocean, believed to be parts of the moon, allowing a resting place for animals, sea life and sea fearers. There are also vast trenches sucking in sea water forming large whirlpools closer to the poles. And sea life the ranges from the most tiniest of fish to monsters the size of mountains. Details which can't be descussed at this time.
The Southern Ocean meanwhile produces much of the weather across Lift. The constant battle between the colder part of the planet and the hot winds of the twin stars create some of the most tremendous and terrifying storms known in Lift. Some coastal areas extend far into the deserts because of how much rain and wind is produced by the Southern Ocean. Likewise on the inner part are tremendous waves, sea tornadoes and constant lightning storms. Only in pole is some semblence of calm available, if one can ignore the bitter temperatures of the cold.
The poles of Lift, recieving very little light or warmth, are the coolest and darker parts of Lift. But each pole is different from each other, due to the inner workings of Lift. The Northern Pole spouts the most active sesmic and volcanic activty anywhere in Lift and is the warmest of the poles. It is believed that during Lift's earliest formation, Lift was struck by what is now the moon. This event propelled both Lift and the moon into the orbital paths of the twin stars, which were caught by it's gravtational pulls. Allowing Lift and the moon to become what they are today.
Because of the impact, however, this allowed the inner activity inside Lift to find an easier way of reaching it's surface due to the weakend crust left by the moon's impact. Today, the Northern Pole is a vast sea of underwater volcanoes forming obsidian islands on the sea and a vast mountainous ring believed to be the remnants of the moon now filled with spewing lava and constant quakes that reshape the landscape every few days.
The Southern Pole on the other hand is a much colder. It is the only place on Lift where ice naturally forms, and form it does. In so much that the the ice has built up since Lift's creation into a single giant icicle. The land in the South is nothing more than a giant ice cube. On it's surface, it is mostly flat and slightly above it's sea level by a few miles. However as you approach it's center, the land starts tilting upwards. It climbs steeper and steeper, until finally it is nearly impossible to traverse by foot as it is too steep to be stepped on without falling and sliding back down to the ground level. However it is here that you can almost see the giant icicle in the middle of the land reach into the skies above.
The twin stars do have some influence on the height of the icicle though. As the ice never can reach to the upper atmosphere due to being so high that the stars heat actually hit the ice from an angle enough to melt it. With this, the water slides back down the icicle, only to refreeze along the body. And through this process, for as far as Liftians have known, this is how the icicle was formed into the giant it is today. It is a great mystery as to why the ice seems to yern to reach for the sky but as far as Liftians know, it's just the way it is.
These two poles sustain life on Lift in a way not seen on any other world, as far as it is know. Not only do they provide the only sorces of water, including underground rivers thought to be flowing from them to the outer deserts, but they also provide two different sources. The North Pole for incredible potent plant growth due to the mineralization from volcanic activity, and the South Pole for the abundant clean and portable drinking water in the form of glaciers.
Wonders of Lift
As Lift's environments range closer to most terrestrial planets, there are some very special places found and rumored among Lifitans.
Because of the wild storms from the Souther Pole that have infiltraded far into the desert, especially underground, oasis carring spring waters can be found in the arid region. There's even a rumor that somewhere is a large network of underground river canyons lined with magnificent crystals formed by relentless carving from water to the oasises in the desert.
In the South and North poles, there is a tale of two Liftian scholars who took to study the geography of both regions but neither have been seen for centuries, nor are there any known evidence of their presences in either region. Though this may be due to the lack of exploration from any civilization due to the hazardous nature of both regions. They are called the Scholars of the Poles in Liftian legends and lore.
Towards the East Pole, it is said that the Sand Blasted Caverns contain a strange glowing vines the bloom planets known as the Sand Daisy. It is believed that these plants contain the collected energy from deep within Lift. The vines themselves are harder than some of the strongest metals known on lift, hardened by the sand blasting through their homes. But every few decades, it grows a softer bulb known as the Sand Daisy which the sand eventually wears off and carries it deeper into the tunnels to form new vines.
It is said if one were to collect the bulb in the state just before it is carried away, it can be fermented into a drink said to increase the energy and lifeforce of Liftian. Though very few have ever been seen in eons since it was discovered, as one would have to brave the wind blasted tunnels in complete darkness as the air around you carries enough sand to strip even the well protected into bones.
The last wonder has to do with aura of the moon among the poles. It's not just light that gets reflected of the moon as it passes over the poles. A mysterious energy is also reflected off the moon seen by Liftians from a distance in the form of a greenish-blue beam. Along the very center of the poles are formed from the moon are one of the most sought after resources among Liftians known as the Red Star and Blue Star Tears. As the beam strikes the center of the poles, a massive influx of energy vaporizes the surfaces surrounding the area. In a matter of seconds as the beam enters and passes, the vaproized material quickly cools and reforms into a massive crystal, regardless of either pole's extreme temperature difference.
It is believe that part of the crystal is made from the moon itself while the other part is made of either poles collective elements in region. The Red Star Tear forms into a radiant single glowing prism of the moon's aura with a raging inferno contained inside the crystal. While the Blue star forms the shape of the giant glaicer with a dark blue glow emitted from with in it's crystal. Liftians belive that either Tear contains termendous power that can be wielded to either destroy or created Lift as one would see fit.
But so far only five tiny fragments of either crystal have ever been gathered in Lift's recorded history. This is because once the moon passes the tears are destroyed shorty after by the environment of the poles. The Red Tear, formed from the materials of the lava in the impact crater quickly melt the crystal which causes a tremendous explosion from the energy withen the crystal. Which forces a tidal wave of laval to spew from the crater unto the surround sea causing untold havoc across the entire ocean and along the coast lines.
The Blue Tear on the other hand is destroyed because the energy in the crystal itself is far too warm for the surrounding enviroment, which collapses the giant icicle in a tremendous implosion onto the crystal and smashing it. The impact of the collapse causes the entire Southern Pole to jetteson water from beneath it causing it's own catostrophic tidal wave along it's coastal lines.
However these events seem to only occur every ten thousnd or so years as oppose to every cycle of the moon. Liftians have taken into account from previous civilizations found remains in the coastal regions and constructed their own far from the coast lines. However temporary industries thrive among the coast, knowning the bounty of the ocean is far too great to abandoned as well as the foolish chance of gathering a Tear, though suicidal.
The Five Fragments
Lift's most major legends form around the five fragments of the tears found in various places across lift. Of these, only two fragments are known to be held by the civilization known as the Hopper Empire. Two are believed to be held by nomadic clans in the deserts. And the last only rumored to be held by one of the Scholars of the Poles.
It is believed that in the earliest stages of civilization were no more advanced than common animals on Earth. In fact almost all life on Lift was incredibly primative when it started appearing in Lift's early history. That was until the first Tear event occured that released the first massive amount of energy across Lift, believed to have spured all life towards sentience with the fragments themselves being the greatest cataylist for specific societies. And one of the earliest known ancestors of Lift to evolved were the Hoppers.
The rise of the Hopper Empire and Evolution
The Hoppers, as comparison in Earth terms, are sentient upright standing rabbits. Their evolution is unique as they have actually split into two distinct evolutionary paths from one common ancester, which is believed to been caused by discovery of the two Tear fragments.
The first evolution tree involves the Hopper race known as the Stout Bouncers. This race retains somewhat of a smaller statue compared to the other Hopper race. The retain much of the fur of their ancestors for body heat. They have far shorter ears like those of a feline but do have some human features such as much more evolved hands, longer legs and a more prominent neck. They almost appear as small children in rabbit costumes with the ears shortened when standing straight up, as humorous as that may sound.
However their evolution, which is believed to have been effected by one of the two Tear fragments, increased not only their natural agility and acrobatic prowress but also their intelligence. Such incredible evolutionary traits, especially in the earliest parts of Lift history, allowed the Hoppers to quickly grow as one of the most dominant society on the planet.
In Hopper society, Stout Bouncers are highly respected as great scholars, goverment leaders and, surprisingly, explorers. They have spear headed most advancedments seen on lift: Everything from reasearch and industry to education and technology. Techonolgy being the most important as much of Hopper society relies on mechinery and gadgets to accomplish many of their goals and tasks in and outside the Hopper Empire.
Naturally most advancements were due in credit to the research made into the two Tears the Empire has long held onto. Most notably the concepts of energy storage and transferance. Which have given Hoppers the ability to have technological wonders that could run for years on energy packed storge cells known as Hopper Cells. These energy cells, along with other advancements have allowed Hoppers to explore wider ranges of applications such as communication devices to enhancments to Hopper antaomy and far reaching studies like astrology and exploration.
While Stout Bouncers are the main spear heads for the advancement of the empire, their statures put them at a dissadvantage when it comes to the nature of things like war with other rival civilizations, negotiating with much larger denizens of Lift or large scale industrial applications. This is where the cousins to the Bouncers come in; the Hare Jacks.
Hare Jacks make up the more common population of the Hopper Empire. Their evolution differs much more greatly than the Bouncers. Their height being the most notable as they reach upwards of seven feet or even more. They lost the jumping prowress of their shorter cousins but have gained far greater strength and endurance. They also have more innate senses due to more complex evolved nervous systems, allowing them to experience their senses with greater percision and clarity. There is a rumor that Hare Jacks also have gained a sixth sense in dectecting energy sources natural to lift, but this is unconfirmed by the empire despite numerous studies.
Hare jacks also have far less fur than Bouncers, believed to be a consequence to more exposure to elements of Lift than their cousins, leading to more leather like skin and hair. Incidently there is quite an amount of contention among Bouncers because of their inability to grow hair themselves. This has lead to a giant Wig industry where Bouncers actually compete in annual contest for the most outrageous wig designs on Lift. Quite the sight to see if you happen to find yourself on Lift as some wigs created amount to just throwing anything and everything on top of a Bouncer's head.
Anyway, Hare Jacks in the Empire handle the more traditional roles of a society: Agriculture, mining, defense and the like. Mining being the most important as much techonology has made the Hoppers the most advanced society on Lift, much of their material comes from lands outside of the Empire. More specifically in the jungle marshlands to the north and the surrounding moutain ranges around the main seat of power for the Hoppers.
Because of the necessity of traveling great distances to retrieve materials, many outpost intrude upon the lands of other civilizations, such as the Great Tribe of Sliders; a society made up of snake like creatures with incredible dexterity and swiming abilities. Most other Liftians view the Hopper Empire as self-serving conquerors, which has led to a number of battles and wars along these outpost. Hare Jacks are usually conscripted as soldiers for the empire, even against their wishes, simply to keep the flow of material steady.
For the most part, Hare Jacks serve as fodder for the empire's physical needs. Though there are some exceptions. Because Hare Jack evolution is influenced by their Tear Fragment shard as well, some Jacks are capable of feats even Bouncers cannot comprehend.
As mentioned before, Jacks more often than not can find hard to find sources of natural energy sources that not even the most advanced Bouncer inventions can locate. Like a compass, Jacks can almost pin point any sorce of energy they come across, usually in the form of thermal energized crystals and rich deposits of coal. It is even said that all Jacks can perdict the time of the Moon Tear events that occur every ten thousnd years, though this is not confirmed. Jacks also have a natural exploration tendencies, much like their cousins. Driving them to reach into the furthest and darkest reaches of Lift that not even most Bouncers dare to venture into. It is in fact believed that it was a Hare Jack that first discovered the legendary Sand Daisy in the Sand Blasted Caverns of the East.
The Decline of the Hoppers
Bouncers were once the more numerous population in the empire. But then the population began a dramatic deline around the events leading up to the story. Rumors ran wild throughout the empire about the sudden decline of the Bouncers. The most prominent rumor being that the Tear that gave rise to their evolution was begining to fade and with it the traits of the Stout Bouncers fading among newborns. Another rumor supported by eye witness accounts are that the majority of Bouncers have suddenly began to feel a mysterious pull to head to the Southern Pole. Citizens of the empire have watched as the Stouts either slink away from their positions with unnerving urgency or simply dissappear never to be heard from again.
Rumor or not, the Stout Bouncers now are all but a few handful of elders thrusted into maintaining a troubled empire. This vacuum in power and organization has left large parts of the empire open to civil war and loss of teritory to rival factions. One particular rising power are the monsterous boar men known as the Grubbing Dominion.
The Grubbing Dominion
The Grubbings are a vicious warrior race of hulking boar flesh and leather. They ripple with fat, muscle and armor. With their soldiers decorated in blood stained tusks jutting from every part of their plate and chain mail armored hides and surrounded by a halo of skulls around their waste, of Hopper and other conquered Liftain victims. Most frightening of all are their large gaping maws of crooked sharp teeth that almost dwarf their own tusk. Truely a nightmareish oppenent to face on any battlefield or a terror to befall unfortante Liftians caught in an ambush.
The Grubbings are far less intelligent compared to the more civilized socities of Lift but they are one of the most succesful conquering militant forces on the planet, with the Hoppers being the only force strong and intelligent enough to outwit and push back against their expansions from the Eastern Deserts. However since the Hopper's decline in power and leadership, the Grubbings have been slowly taking former Hopper outpost and resoruce operations from them near the upper jungle marshlands of the Northern Ocean. The Grubbing Dominion moves ever steadily towards the central marshlands, leading most Hoppers believe that a full scale invasion could happen in the near future.
The Grubbing Dominion motivations for moving on the Hopper Empire are believed to be from a percieved lack of strength of the empire coninciding with the decline of the Stout Bouncer leadership. They also have a great desire to take possesion of the Tear Fragments in a bid to expand their power and might, as evidence from the few mained Hoppers who manage to escape from Grubbing prison camps. But the main reason is that the Grubbing Dominion see the Hopper empire as one of the greatest sources of food on the planet.
Grubbings are not above eating anything or anyone they manage to obtain or capture in their conquests. All their prisoners are forced into harsh labor, building most of the Grubbing fortress and infastructure before being uncermoniously devoured when their use has worn out or sometimes just to satisfy their wardens appetite. They are particularly vile creatures as not only will they eat their victims while they are still alive, they will torment them slowly by maiming them while the eat them to prolong their suffering. The reports from the few Hoppers and other Liftains who manage to escape are haunted by their memories of seeing many of their countrymen, friends, family and even children screaming in horendous pain as they eaten in only a few feet of them only to be beaten back into work out of fear of being next.
Even Grubbings themselves are not safe from their own kind. Soldiers of the Grubbing Dominion are expect to conquer all territory by the time their generals are sent out to inspect their progress. Those who fail to meet the expectations of the Dominion are executed in a brutal bloodfrenzy as they are devored by their fellow soldiers in arms over the course of three days. It's one of the reasons Grubbings are particularly vicious conquerors out of fear of being disposable themselves. As such, the Grubbing Dominion has become one of the greatest threats on Lift in the growing absence of the Hopper Empire.
