Endianness is just a fancy word for telling computers which order to read and write numbers in.
Let's take a random number (three hundred twenty-seven) and write it out:

If we were to break this number up, we'd have
- 3 hundreds
- 2 tens
- 7 ones
In English we write the numbers from left to right in descending order, with the biggest values first on the left, followed by the next biggest to the right, followed by the next biggest to the right...with the smallest value on the far right.
This is big-endian because the biggest value (3 hundreds in the above example) comes first on the left end.
Little-endian is the opposite: the smallest value comes first on the left end and the largest value is at the end on the far right. If we were to write out three hundred and twenty-seven in little-endian it would look like the following:
