Description Here we have a really amazing piece of art, by the maestro and my good friend, Dave Williams
and myself. Be sure to drop by Dave's gallery to check out the amazing pencils.
A little bit of background. I probably spent as much time on this piece than any in my career. It was the perfect storm. A) I consider Dave to be one of the best of the best our art form has to offer. He's a legitimate genius in my book. It's always a bit nerve wracking to work with someone like this for, essentially, the first time. I dont want to be "the guy that f'ed up Dave's masterpiece.
B) As some of you already know, Ive been dealing with some hand issues. Due to a neck injury a number of months back I was left with some minor nerve damage resulting in a small tremor in my drawing hand. NOT good. Ive spent the last 4 months trying to work through it. Its been a slow-going, frustrating process that had left me burnt out, discouraged, and considering the future of my career in inking. Im happy to say that, due to regular Acupuncture treatements over the last month and a half, my hand seems to have returned to me. Im back to about 95% and feeling much more optimistic about things.
However, I was working on this cover in the midst of the worst of it all. I agonized over every single line. Nothing really flowed for me. The end result was, in my opinion, much stiffer and mechanical looking than Id otherwise have done it. Much of the spontenaety of my lines were sucked away since I had to put so much effort in to my hand control. It took twice as long to do.

Im not saying Im not happy with it. In fact, I think its a very successful piece. I just know that I could have done better and me being the harsh self-critic that I am, all I see are the faults.

The fact that Dave was happy with it brings me endless amounts of joy and more than a little relief. Considering how difficult it was for me to pull off, I consider it a big triumph. I hope you do as well!

Wow! I am glad to hear your hand is getting better.

You did an awesome job with the inks. You said you thought that it's a little too mechanical, but Brohawk's kinda retro style goes well witht the clean smooth lines you did. I don't think a busty inking style would look anywhere near as good as this. You know you did a good job when the piece could be sold as is. You did such a good job that I don't think it needs colors. Which begs the question, who would you like to see color this?

I totally agree with you about him being one of the best in the industry. I swear, he totaly owns Superman. NO one els comes anywhere near his version. That and his version of Captain America. He has an eye for the epic I think. I'm not really sure HOW he gets Superman to looks larger than life like he does but its awesome. Put that together with a really good writer and your inks and there is a comic book I would be a total fantard over.

Neck injury leading to hand problems? Say no more. That's why two of my fingers in my right hand go dead-cold and fall asleep at random intervals.

I feel ya. Aside from injuries, holy crap did you rock this piece. Dave's awesome pencils and your inks make for pure unadulterated pinup heaven.

I told Mark Irwin a month ago or so, he ought to put together a video or a piece on DA that shows his process. I'm going to ask the same of you. I'd love to see how you tackle your inking.

Thank you! Sorry to hear about your own hand issues. What was/is your neck problem? Mine is a C-5 herniated disc. Ive been living pain free for a few months now, thankfully, but foresee future problems. Ive been and athlete and runner my enire life. That and the fact that Im 6'4" and weigh about 220 has really put the stress on the old spine over the years. The curve in my neck is also all but gone thanks to being bent over a drawing table for most of my life. Along with the acupuncture, Ive also been going to a Chiropractor for a few months to restore the curve in my neck. Ive made a lot of progress. If Id only known then what I know now. Take care of that spine!

Sorry to hear about both of your problems. Certainly makes me feel better about being slightly overweight that's for sure!

I was gonna ask you about the chiropractor and if you might consider seeing one. I have a whole batch of friends who became chiros at uni and i cannot speak highly enough for them and what they do.

Happy to hear you are seeing some improvement as well.

I was in a high speed crash going 50mph and hit a car straight on last March. Pretty insane that I made it out alive, but even more insane is that I literally walked (more like hobbled) away from the car wreck itself. My mom was driving and some lady turned in front of us while were going through a green light. I was "lucky" enough to see the car coming, so I did what you're totally NOT supposed to do, I tensed up and threw my arms up and pulled my legs up against me. Because you know, when you know you're about to get into an accident, you're supposed to go limp. Riiight

Anyways, I sprained my neck, had a spinal infection a few weeks after the crash, and as a result of everything, I now have nerve damage in my extremities and...wait for it... the discs between L4 and L5 are deteriorating. Nice huh? I can't lift over 20lbs

I hear you about being athletic... I used to jog 5 miles every other day with my friend, hike in the mountains with my dogs daily, and ride my bike all over town. I did kickboxing at college. I was probably in the best shape of my life. Had a concussion while on a roadtrip in New Mexico in 2004, that limited my movement for over a year, so I'd been trying to get back into shape and then this accident happened.

So now I'm getting back on my bike, going back to physical therapy (was in it for 9 months last year), and doing pilates at home.

Can't complain though, I'm alive, I can still draw, and I fell in love with my best friend as a result of it.

Wow. Sounds like youve paid your dues and then some. Thank God you and your mom came out alive. Sounds like youve got Degenerative Disc Disease. Ive got it as well. When I first heard this I just about crapped a Miata. It sounds so ominous. As Im sure you already know, its a terribly mis-named condition and, in fact, isnt a disease at all but rather something everyone will develope eventually and something that developes earlier in athletes from the extra wear and tear. In essence, not anything to lose sleep over as long as youre careful.

I herniated my C5. The disk in between it and my C6 looks like a pancake. Ive been told Ill need a Discectomy sooner or later...for sure. Im avoiding it at all costs and going to great lengths to buy as much time as possible. The thought of having my vertbre fused together isnt a very pleasant one. Once you let them cut on you theres no going back. My running days are over now and its been a really hard pill to swallow. Im getting my cardio in on an Elyptical machine I bought recently. Low impact, good work out. Im back on the free weights as well so Im more-or-less living a normal life. Itll happen again over something stupid, Im sure. Ill bend over to pick up a pencil and that will be that.

As you say though, I cant complain. Im alive and healthy. Thanks for sharing!

Hey, injured artists unite They actually think mine is a form of arthritis, which explains why I'm always, always sore. Going through the EMG was fun, I never thought I'd get to listen to my muscles, literally. And yeah, it sounded awful, and I got extremely angry. Angry at the person for hitting us, angry at life. But physical therapy really helped, and with the assortment of stretching aids I have at my house, it's like my studio is also my own personal torture chamber. Ha!

They figure I'll need surgery further down the line, but I'm totally with ya, I'm going to stay as far away from the knife for as long as I can. Who knows, maybe in five, ten years, they'll have found a way to replace the discs without fusing vertabrae together. I definitely can't jog anymore, but biking is fairly low impact since I have a bike that keeps my back straight, and it's an easy way to get errands done around town

Just gotta keep drawing and move forward! Thanks for sharing too!

They actually do have an artificial disc on the market now but its a very new technology and bound to be riddled with problems. It doesnt seem like it would be such a hard thing to create but, due to its close proximity to the spinal chord I guess theres literally no room for error. Hopefully in 10 years or so theyll have something viable.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

kayjkay In reply to TimTownsend [2008-09-26 18:16:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I really don't want a knife near my back until they perfect that technology. But we'll be getting there soon I'm sure. There really isn't any room for error. My mother, a registered nurse of 35+ years, went in for back surgery a few years ago. In a "simple" back surgery (what surgery is ever simple?) they nicked her spinal cord and she had to lay completely flat for three days so it could mend without paralyzing her. With that in mind, I'm moooore than happy to wait.

Damn, you need to stop that. Just stop making such amazing art, making all of us look bad haha. Nah, but it is great and love the detail. I don't know about the floating heads. They get lost and look like grey areas from far away. But up close it's cool to see all of them. Keep it up man
