Description Wind roared in her ears, the whip of flapping fabric echoing in her head. Her arms reached upwards, grasping for a savior that wasn’t there. A numbness crawled into her mind as she fell; the feeling of fear had long since ebbed. She fell in silence, her thoughts scattered and few.

The tree branch had been sturdy a moment ago. Solid and unwavering beneath her feet as she reached for that last berry. Maybe it had been foolish to try and get that much food. She hadn’t realized her foot was slipping at first. Her only focus was staying alive one more day. Just one. Even now, her stomach snarled, demanding to be fed after so long of eating nothing. Seemed that was the least of her problems now.

Maybe I deserve this?, she thought. Maybe this is what I get for making it so long. Hopping from giant home to home, living in their walls, barely getting by. Her life, and death it seemed, was all borrowed time. Fitting of a borrower. A bitter laugh left her lips.

Her eyes closed. There was no point now. She knew the ground was coming quickly, and it wouldn’t be long before…whatever came next.  Paradise, pits, or maybe somewhere in between. As long as she wasn’t alone again.

Her body went limp in those final moments, praying that her death would be swift. Hopefully, it would be quick.

She hit something. Hard. Gasping, her body jolted from the impact. What-?! A chill ran down her arms as she realized two things. One, she wasn’t dead. Far from it. Two, the surface she’d landed in was much more terrifying than the ground. Fingers as tall as she was curled around her legs, effectively pinning her to her back in a strange giant’s palm.

“Easy, little one…I’ve got you.”

Stiffening, she shook her head and turned. There, looming above her, was the owner of the hand she sat in.

“You’re safe now.”
