The wind swirled on the cool autumn dusk, leaves on the floor dappled with auburn and gold. The trots of Dynabyx crunching when it made contact with the leaves, the chatter of folk that surrounded the area.
The sky was a dark dusty blue, little stars barely visible in the sky, yet the moon was bright with a glowing ivory. Birds outlined in black flew overhead, a feather or two falling out the sky from their wings, they cawed loudly as they traveled.
Aves was making his way over to the Whispering Cave, he felt the crunch of the leaves underneath his talons, he clutched a wrench in his left hand as he walked. A few others around his age were also on the path towards the Whispering Cave, but likely not for the same reason as him.
He was there to get a reference for his invention prototype, as he had created a robotic goober days earlier. Although, he had never had never owned a goober, so he did not know how they acted and he could never actually implement the AI for the robot.
After a while of walking, he had made his way to the entrance of the Whispering Cave, the bright teal glowing mushrooms illuminated the entrance, the smell of the cave water added to the mystique of the whole thing, even if it was just a place where druids and farms were.
Entering the Whispering Cave, he looked around for a folk he had heard been called, ‘Eddie’, Apparently he was a rancher of goobers. Aves thought that the most likely place would be where the most populated place in the caves would be, because goobers were quite popular with kits around his age.
Goobers are usually a kit's first pet, so that’s why there’s usually a hoard of folk around where this ‘Eddie’ lives.
Speaking of folk, around what seemed like a small area, there were goobers dotted around with kits of the grove attempting to grab them but… Mostly failing. Aves wandered over and scoured the rocky area, squinting as he did so.
A green folk who didn’t look so good in the self-care department, spoke. “Hey kid, YAWN, Here for a goober..?” They had very rugged clothes, and a net that they were basically sleeping on.
Aves just squinted at the folk, not wanting to talk to them, but this must be the ‘Eddie’ That he heard the den mama tell him about. Aves after staring at Eddie for a bit, nodded slowly, still not uttering a word.
“...Alright then, If you can catch one, you can have it.” He mumbled wearied, Eddie could barely keep his eyes open on the job. Also a goober was atop his head, snuggling in.
Aves looked at the array of goobers and kits, the goobers seemed to be quite quick, and Aves was not the most agile kit in the world. But, this was for his invention, he couldn’t just stare and hope one would come to him, he’d have to go over there himself and try to catch one like the rest of the kits.
With a deep breath, he shoved his wrench in the inner folds of his bandana around his neck, and started to bolt after the first goober he saw, which happened to be a sandy yellow and lime green coloured goober. He chased this goober for a while before attempting to leap and catch the goober, as he did so, another kit a bit smaller than him did the same, they landed beside each other with a thud.
The kit looked over to Aves and exclaimed; “OMIGOSH ARE WE GOING FOR THE SAME GOOBER?” They seemed to be rather… enthusiastic about this. “Whaddya think this goober is so special we BOTH went after it? Kind of a crazy coincidence huh!” They grinned wide.
Aves winced at the yelling in his ear, before actually taking a good look at the kit, they were grey and black, patterned like an old-world creature he had seen before in a book he had read.
“Ya look like you’ve seen a ghost! Are you okay?” The grey and black kit’s head tilted in confusion.
Aves hadn’t even realised he’d been staring in horror at the kit, he could feel his anxiety biting into his chest. He broke his stare because of this, getting up and dusting the small pebbles off of his fur.
The other kit scrambled to their feet, seemingly trying to make sure that they could keep the conversation going. “Not a talker huh? That’s okay! I can do all the talking for you. BLAH blAH blAH.” The kit mimicked a talking mouth with their paw. Aves just looked back with a look of disquietude.
The kit glanced from their paw to Aves once more. “Man, can I at least get your name? Here, I’ll go first! My name's Bandette! And you are….?????” Bandette trailed off, motioning for Aves to respond with hope.
Aves gave a very small sigh. “Aves.” he spoke, although it was quiet. He could see Bandettes eyes light up as he spoke.
“OMIGOSH! You actually responded! Aves! That’s a very cool name. Aves, aves, aves.” The folk repeated his name over and over again, excited about hearing it, maybe a little too excited as she didn’t even notice that Aves had left to go after the sandy yellow and lime green goober once more.
“HEEYY!!!! WAIT FOR MEEEE!!!” Bandette yelled after Aves, her voice echoing throughout the cave, making some other folk turn to look at her. She was also running after Aves at this time to catch up.
After a couple of hours, it turned from dusk to fully night, the cavern glittered with the blue light that came from the mushrooms on the walls, bruises galore on Aves body and anxiety biting him from inside due to the folk that didn’t leave his side for more than five minutes at a time.
He had finally, on his own, caught the sandy yellow and lime green goober, and with that, once Bandette wasn’t looking, he BOLTED out of the Whispering Cave. He dodged and weaved between the few folk that remained inside the caverns, whether they had been visiting like him, or lived there themselves.
Bandette was following close behind, being around the same speed as Aves, maybe even a bit faster considering Aves was a bit unfit compared to some kits. “WAIT UP!!” She yelled from behind him.
Aves tried to just ignore her, he’ll probably never see her again, so it doesn’t really matter how ‘rude’ he is to her by ignoring her.
A massive headache formed in his head, whether it be from the stress of trying to deal with Bandette all day, or the fear that he’ll see her again and he’ll feel guilt for ignoring her, he didn’t want to feel guilt for this… the kindness given to him from Bandette needed to be purged from his mind. He needs to focus on his projects, nothing can get in the way of that.
Making useless friendships will only slow him down.
