Description What is significant about this shot is that it represents the largest remnant of what used to be the old growth forest lands that covered all of New York City, when it was inhabited by the Lenape Indians, prior to its discovery by the Europeans in the 1530s. Most of the eastern seaboard of what eventually became the United States was forest lands. There are trails here, in the woods on the grounds of the New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx, NY, that were Indian hunting trails and were later traveled by soldiers on both sides during the American Revolution. There are also marks here that were left by glaciers thousands of years ago. When you walk these trails, much of the history comes to mind. I do like to think that these woods remember the past. And just over a mile away, the landscape becomes totally urban.
