He didn't abandon them...he and Donnie disagree about how they should defeat the Kraang and I guess Leo insists they do his plan cuz he's the leader and all, but his plan is shit and he gets separated from the group, so that leaves Donnie to lead. So I don't think he left on purpose, they probably got separated while they were fighting. I don't think Leo would risk leaving his bros on purpose, not after what happened in New Girl In Town...that was bad.
