Description Final solution for Fred Lynch's "The Sound and the Fury." The assignment was to make an illustration about a sound you hate, black and white, fixed size.
I was so excited to get this assignment. Years and years ago when I was just getting the idea of going to art school, I toured at the Montserrat College of Art (a very good school), and I was part of a tour that stopped by Fred Lynch's upperclass advanced illustration class, which was critiquing their versions of this very assignment. My mom and I sat down to listen and didn't get up for the rest of the extensive critique. I was enthralled. That critique, and Fred's teaching style, was one of the biggest reasons I decided to go to art school. So anyway I was pumped to try my hand at this.
The whole point of Fred's class is to illustrate things in a way that solves the problem,(substance,) but also so that you're creating a piece that you would be making anyway (style). The nature of the assignment led to a lot of really intense and some very unpleasant imagery, but I have found that that's not really what I enjoy doing, and I was determined to make something sort of charming that still got the idea of annoyance across.

Ink, and then black and white gouache on arches block watercolor paper.

Really nice...really classy as well The contrast note of the splatters is really effective, and I just really love the hand loosely gripping the sketchbook. And also I love the gesture of the girls in the background. And also I'll shut up now, but GOOD WORK. PS WHERE ARE YOUR COLOR KEYS LADY?

I like where you're going with that kind of stuff. Very nice touch, the "dirt stains" flying about the headphones. Has a timid "pollutant" feel. It's a very subtle and clever distinction from other more typical/obvious ways you could have rendered the sound. In the end, the annoyed dude could really be sensitive and picking up on very small, otherwise negligible, signals.

Gorgeous illustration! I really like all the little details in the background, etc. And the hand holding the sketchpad is gorgeous.

Oddly enough my favorite part of this picture is the simple drape of the sketcher's hand over his paper pad.
