I had a similar idea to that eons ago.
A race of birds use ships that look like weapons; well, one of them works just like this picture.
Pretty much, think of a pike or lance plummeting into the earth, and then launching a volley of munitions wiping out surrounding attackers/defenders nearby (like 100 meter radius), and then becoming a mega turret with about 30 or so guns going off constantly, wiping out air and ground support. And that's before the transports and remaining invasion ships (Kunais) start plaguing the battlefield like locusts.
The main function, of course, is for invasion purposes, especially raiding large cities and military installations. Area 51 would have no chance against even 1 of them alone. They usually travel with an armada of ships. Now talk about screwed. It's practically a 1-sided fight.
