Description
When I was 4 years old, my mother told me the Cucuy (Mexican boogeyman) was coming for me because I was misbehaving. When she described him to me, I was terrorized and immediately cleaned up my act. When I got older, I knew it wasn’t real, yet the terror I had experienced as a child rooted itself deep down in my soul. To this day, I’m still very uncomfortable in the dark. This is the legend, and the image that was forever created in my mind.
El Cucuy is a Mexican urban legend. Legend says that once upon a time a father was very angry at his children for misbehaving. As a matter of punishment, he decided to lock them in his closet to learn their lesson. After a while, he decided to go to town and run some errands, but he forgot to take his children out of the closet. When he came back from town, he saw that somehow his barn and house had caught on fire, which killed the children. They were burned to ashes and their bodies were never found. The father was cursed for eternity and compelled to look for them in closets everywhere. As time passed, his insanity twisted his mind and he grew an appetite for children. He now hunts them in closets at night, waiting for the right moment to pounce.
