Mi-go's are an ancient alien race, who have been mining the Earth for millions of years. Their base of operations in out solar system is on a yet unfound planet somewhere behind Neptune. (During the time H.P. Lovecraft wrote the story, Pluto had just been found and was considered the 9th planet of our system)
They are fungus based life form, that has mastered the travel through space by using their wings. They've also mastered the art of transporting living conciseness through space by taking their brains and sealing them in metal cylinders with speech boxes. This way they can take their wingless brethren as well as humans and other alien lifeforms with them.
