Description

Finally got my Toothless quadsuit to the point of being wearable. Had two test runs at Jafax. It was a blast! He still needs a lot more work before Youmacon, and some better photos. More photos to come, as I will be in 4th of July parade in my tiny hometown ^^

His wings are extended in the photo and are connected to a button on my stilts to open and close them His mouth also has a button to open and close it, but it severely needs adjusting to make it move better. Vision is out panels on the belly and through a camera in the forehead.

Huge thanks to all of my fantastic entourage of handlers, including , and my sister shown here, who is the best handler I know. And I couldn't have made this amazing costume possible without the technical skills and funding from my biggest fan, my father.

If you've never made a mascot/ fursuit type costume. I would recommend starting with a stand up suit of toothless instead, as it would much easier and cheaper. With a quadsuit you really need to use a lot of body padding to even out the proportions of the arms and body size.

Alright I'll go with that then in your opinion how well does a cosplay of Toothless go over at conventions?

and would you recommend any type of padding at all for a stand up suit of him?

Everyone loves him! Depending on your body type, maybe some stompy feet would go well with him. Similar to this ([link] )

I can try my hand at making some stompy feet, shouldn't be that hard. What about the wing size? Sorry for all the questions lol.

it's ok. It depends on if you are going for a realistic/accurate look or a chibi cutesy look. It would be best to draw the shape out on paper to get an idea of what size you think looks good. For example, [link] has tiny cute wings, but they would also look good if they were twice that large, but they would also be heavier.

Aaaww that's a cute Toothless! Here's the wings that I have [link] do you think those would work? I just need to put a better frame in the wings and this is what I'm wanting to model my Toothless cosplay after [link]

Toriroz In reply to jackie-girl [2013-02-13 16:24:35 +0000 UTC]

Yea those might work with correct framing.

what did you use to make the wing skeleton, if you don't mind me asking? I've been making a suit for my friend to wear soon, and the wing structure has been way too heavy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Toriroz In reply to hiro-chan28 [2012-07-12 20:58:39 +0000 UTC]

I used an aluminum clothes dryer umbrella, like this [link] It's very light weight and not very expensive for the amount of aluminum tubing you get out of it

Tsukune [2012-07-03 21:11:19 +0000 UTC]

How did you rig your wings I used a simple pulling mechanism in my toothless quad that also went down into my stilts and when i hunched my back the wings opened (sometimes)
yours almost look powered by a motor, how exactly did you accomplish that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Toriroz In reply to Tsukune [2012-07-03 21:41:55 +0000 UTC]

I used a scissor mechanism like that seen here [link] . The lower rod slides up and down using an actuator that is attached to a 18V power drill battery.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tsukune In reply to Toriroz [2012-07-04 00:57:01 +0000 UTC]

Oh interesting never would have thought of that!
And how is the weight for the mechanism, not to heavy I hope? That's always an issue with big wings haha
Thanks for sharing!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Toriroz In reply to Tsukune [2012-07-04 20:26:22 +0000 UTC]

The weight isn't too bad. The framework is made out of super light aluminum. The heaviest thing is the battery XD

Tsukune In reply to Toriroz [2012-07-04 20:58:46 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha those darn batteries how dare they be heavy
Well it seems to have worked, this looks great! I might even borrow your genius in my next dragon quad

Oh wow! This definitely shows all of the hard work! I'd love to see some videos of the wing and mouth mechanisms moving, but I figure you'll be adjusting the mouth to (near?) perfection before you get a bunch of videos. It's a little hard to see details from the lighting, but I'm sure it looks even more amazing in full light!
