Description “First a young girl, then a man, felt a hand on their shoulder, and turned to see the infernal one with glowing face, bidding them a good evening.” –The Birmingham Post, 1886.

A demon? A ghost? A bear? In the thickness of the fog, everybody saw a different thing jumping in and out of the scene.

Not even the nature of his acts is clear. The Times reported in 1838 that Londoners said he is a highborn ripper letting his vilest instincts loose on innocent girls, but Penny Dreadful stories portray him a romantic antihero punishing vicious foes. Perhaps he is both. Stephen King claims his most brutal acts have something to do with the fog during strawberry springs. Paul Leni viewed him as none other than Jack the Ripper. One way or another, he will always be the Terror of London.
