This is extremely far in the NextGen verse's storyline, after Starfall's attempt and failure to take over the Crystal Empire with Tenebris' power backing her up. After Tenebris is revealed to be the one giving Starfall her power, and after Flurry Heart shouts out "ALLO!" amist ponies calling out Sombra's name. This happens after the lengthy reformation process he goes through to be a member of his family again. He still hasn't gotten everyone's trust, and can't live in the Crystal Empire without risk of being blown up, but he's comfortably living in Ponyville, being watched over by Duchess; the only pony able to defeat him because she secretly studies black magic and can manipulate his dark magic (and the only pony who kinda scares him).

He's strolling through town one day when a loud sound catches his attention and he sees a unicorn walk through a strange portal from nowhere. The unicorn then loses his magical glamour, and reveals himself to be an alicorn. Tenebris brushes it off though, he doesn't know exactly how many alicorns live in Equestria, and a portal seems like a weird way to travel when you can teleport, but hey, what does he know. He starts to walk off when he suddenly walks into something. The alicorn had teleported in front of him and seemed distressed. Then in the smallest most unsure voice he hears him say;
"..Dad?"

(some spoilers for the MLP FIM comics: "Reflections" (Issues 17 -20):

Atlas (the son of Princess Celestia, and Mirror Sombra), has the ability to travel through dimensons. The problem however, is that he doesn't really have control of it sometimes. And he is unable to enter his father's dimension. Which is why seeing a pony with a bright red horn and black coat just like his father is shocking to say the least. His father can't enter this dimension because then it would fall apart, that's why it was sealed off.

Once Atlas and Tenebris have been brought up to speed on how they're related, they decide to just stick with calling eachother cousins, but Atlas can't help but wonder if Tenebris is anything like his father. Tenebris also wonders if he's anything like Sombra. The two of them become unlikely friends, trying to figure out their heritage and the shadow Sombra has left over them together.

Atlas also has a cutiemark now! It's a world with multiple worlds surrounding it. The image of the centre world changes depending on which dimension he's in (and where on that world he is).
