Character’s History
A sole daughter of Nyai Roro Kidul, the queen of spirit ruling in southern sea of Java island, in the southeast Asia (more info [link] . As the lore said, in exchange for protecting the island form the fierce waves of Indian Ocean, the queen married each of the island’s rulers in turn. But ironically, Smita is not of royal blood, but born from a peasant man who caught the queen’s attention, thus, rendered her ineligible for the throne’s successions. Despite all of that, she was raised and educated as a princess.
As she grew older, she learnt of human world and became more interested in it, especially after learning that she was unable to succeed the throne.
In the year 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami happened and although the human said it was natural phenomenon, the queen regarded it as a threat to her kingdom as she felt a big disturbance from the human world. While Smita, seeing the chance to appease her curiosity, proposed to her mother to investigate the mortal world.
In human world, Smita chose to disguise herself as an exchange student from country to country as it is easier to learning about mortals and looking for information regarding the phenomenon.
Currently she is living in Hong Kong.
Origin of Name
Rara means “beautiful girl” in old Javanese while Smita mean “smile” in Sanskrit.
Personality
Just like her name, she is always calm and smiling, even in the darkest situation, making it hard to read her true emotion.
Raised in conservative environment, she is soft-spoken and reserved in conversations, mostly observing and absorbing information, while keeping her personal matters out of topic, although she is never too shy to make a move on a human male caught her attention. (yeah, she is not a virgin)
As she always moving from country to country (the length of her stay is ranged from one to five months at best), she never took humans to close account, rather she is considered neutral toward them, despite being a half-human herself. She would be kind to humans who appeased her, but she also would show no mercy to anyone who crossed her or held ill intent toward her. Otherwise, she wouldn’t put any attention to the mortals, except if they seemed useful to her investigation, or suit her taste in look.
If she ever met another non-human being, she’d prioritize her mission and thus approach him/her to make a contact and gain information, despite the other’s response or even hostility. After that, she’d try to keep in contact, because she thought non-humans in higher regard than mortals.
She really idolizes and respects her mother and aiming to become like her, strong and wise. The only time she ever lost her smile is when someone badmouthed her mother, and the aftermath is not too pretty.
Power and ability
- Being a spirit, physical combat is not Smita’s forte, instead she is able to control water, but only if it’s available on her surrounding.
- She has the gift of foresight and ability to share her sight with others.
- She can use hypnotize (only works on human)
- She also can understand snakes and reptiles and command them.
- Her real form is of is a naga (mythical serpent), while her spirit form is only used in her homeworld and when appearing in front of mortals who worship her, or want to challenge her.
- Her weakness is heat and fire.
Additional Info
- Her favorite flower is jasmine.
- She likes detailed ornamental pattern (like batik) because it reminded her of her home.
- At first, her human form has long hair but after several years, she decided that short hair more practical and she keeps it short until present.
- Just like her mother, she favors green color, the reason is that there’s no green plant in the underwater spirit world she used to live in.
- She likes spicy food, but avoids it because her left eye unconsciously changed into gold when it is too spicy.
- The snake bracelet she wears is actually her familiar, which can turn into a real snake in emergency or whenever she commands.
- Her leg bracelet is enchanted by her mother, the bells won’t make a sound except when there’s another non-human being.
Creator’s note :
About the spirit world, in this story I used the idea that there are more than one spirit worlds in this earth/human world, each being an enclosed space and reflecting the area it is located, and each ruled by a different ruler. The size of the world is depended on the ruler’s power, and the world would collapse if the ruler’s gone or lose his/her power. The connection between spirit worlds can be said as “know each other existence, but never or rarely in contact”.
