[Inktober 2023. I'm late starting, and my regular ideas aren't turning anything up. Therefore, I'm doing two or three prompts to a sketch and... We'll see what turns up from that...]Somnia tela aranearum, the Dream Weaving Spider.
These spiders haunt the realm of dreams, building up webs that link up the dreams of mortals, reinforcing them and allowing them to share resources. In practical terms this allows the spiders to feed on the transfer of ideas and concepts between dreams, while also serving to trap dreamers who escape from the safety of their prisons of thought and fantasy. The spiders are also able to use vibrations in the web to rapidly track particularly high activity dreams (good sources of food), and travel quickly around to get to them.
Of the three dreams shown here:
1. A young boy dreams of being a monkey in the jungle, able to swing rapidly around and enjoy the freedom of the treetops. Unfortunately, he also read the chapter "Kaa's Hunting" in The Jungle Book earlier in the day, and his dream of being a monkey is now messed up with the memory of Kaa hypnotising the entire monkey colony so that he can feed...
2. A knight fighting a dragon. It's a small one, so there might be a chance...
3. Unfortunately, this dreamer dreamed too largely and too vividly, and the nearby spiders weren't able to contain themselves when the webs around the dream became too thin. At least one spider has decided to invade this dream, and the dreamer... It may not be the same person who wakes up that originally went to sleep...
