If you really think about it, it was the Illusive Man's admiration for Shepard which ultimately proved to be his undoing.

I always thought they forced the adversarial relationship. Why not the overly rich, megalomaniacal, ethically dubious yet-somehow-charismatic uncle instead?

There was a moment in my first ME2 playthrough where I was waiting for Illusive man to tell shepard that he is he's father. He spend billions in rebuilding shepard after all.
