Description
I had a few requests for a drawing tutorial for Lackadaisy so I figured, hey! Let's draw some stupid, whynot?Originally, it had a painting tutorial included, but it was getting to be too long, so I truncated it. That part might make it onto lackadaisycats.com when I hoist up there, though.

Grilled cheese sandwiches are the worst weapons known to man kind. They are what really destroyed Hiroshima. The government just covered it up.
............. my god they are so cute and evil. Amazing!

Ah, I must thank you for this tutorial.
Not on my behalf, but for the DA community.
It's very nice to see a really good tutorial that focuses on character construction and anatomy, rather than the typical "How to draw Anime eyes".
I really think this'll help get some inspired artist off to a good start.

Very informative. However, I agree with others on here that you are underestimating the power of the seemingly innocuous "grilled cheese sandwich".
Do you remember Atlantis? Atlantis was a highly advanced society, complete with a complex system of law, a booming economy, a refined culture, and giant stone fish that could fly and shoot lasers out of their mouths (if the animated Disney documentary is anything to judge by). Everything was going great for Atlantis until some unsuspecting boob slapped a piece of feta between two halves of a roll and toasted it over an open flame. After that, it was only just a matter of time before the whole dang civilization sunk into the churning, stormy depths of the sea.
I should think Rocky would be more careful with that sandwich, lest the entire city of St. Louis sink into the muddy Mississippi without a trace. Sandwiches aren't toys. They should be handled with the utmost care.

Suddenly so many of history's turning points make sense to me! The burning of the library at Alexandria, the Sphinx's nose, both world wars....perhaps we've all underestimated the volatile potential of the bread-cheese-bread combination.
Maybe it'd be in everyone's best interests if I gave him the pistol back...it just seems to me that anyone who flails their arms around like that shouldn't be allowed to hold a gun.

Nononononononoooo! Keep it in. It seems to be immensely popular, if all these comments are anything to judge by.
Also: Your simple-shapes-as-anatomy thing really does work. Just now I used it to draw a picture of Alton Brown getting eaten by a giant Swedish meatball (don't ask) for my sister, and I can attest: It came out super!

The font is one I created myself from my own handwriting (a tedious endeavor if ever there was one, but I think it paid off). The arrows are just painted in by hand in Photoshop. I should have used vectors for that part but...I didn't.

i've ALWAYS, ALWAYS wondered at how some people could make their sketches cleaner like you have done so here.. does that mean your guidlines were very faint, or did you erase them along the way slightly? somehow i just don't understand how your actual lines could be so clean with no trace of the original guidelines. or was that cleaned up digitally (doubting it..)?
i have tried.. and tried.. and failed.. and failed x 1000 trying to sketch like this, because i realize it's much more convenient and more accurate, but my guidelines and actual lines (aka clothes and details) get mixed up and it confuses me and i just ditch the whole thing after a while. =T maybe i sketch too dark or something. *sigh*. =_=;;;;

tracyjb In reply to Ray-chan [2006-06-14 05:42:59 +0000 UTC]
I do about 99% of the clean-up on paper with an eraser, with the other 1% being smudges, drips of coffee and whatnot that I just couldn't erase without Photoshop.
Sketching too dark was a problem of mine for a long time, actually. I had to break myself of the habit. If you find you end up with something that's hopelessly messy, though, there are ways you can transfer just the final lineart to a separate piece of paper. Another option is to ink your work, then erase all the pencil lines...it just happens that I prefer pencil over ink, so I don't do it.
Another thing that can make a big difference is just finding the right paper for your style of drawing. Pencil erases more easily on certain types of paper, it smudges easily on other types and so on...you might try experimenting with some different types to see which best suits you.

and it's totally feasable to destroy half a city block with a grilled cheese sandwhich. You just have to be as good as Rocky.

Brilliant. And a hysterical read as well. Ugh. You're too much to pack in to one person.. you're secretly a group of hyper-intelligent kittens at a keyboard, aren't you?
I was wondering.. what sort of pencil do you use? Mechanical or traditionals..? 2Bs and whatnot?
And do you work directly on to tinted paper for Lackadaisy, or regular 'ol bond paper then tint it in Photoshop?
My curiousity knows no bounds. Must. Pick. Your brain. Yarr..

tracyjb In reply to Endling [2006-06-14 05:32:03 +0000 UTC]
Aww -- thanks! Not hyper-intelligent kittens, really...just kittens with ADD.
As far as pencils and paper go, nothing fancy. I use those throw-away Bic #2 mechanical pencils and standard inkjet printer paper. I -wish- I could find paper with the right tone and texture to work on, but no, the sepia is just a color balance adjustment in Photoshop.
