Description "Things must be done decently and in order..."

Well, I've been talking for months (or years) about updating my website, "The Great Mouse Detective: Disney's Underappreciated 26th Animated Film ." I am not only updating the site, but completely re-formating it! HURRAH!

This is a screen-capture of the "Pastiches" section. Over the years, I have accumulated a massive number of characters, stories, and crossovers, so I have been forced to separate them into sections:
  • Oxford University Chronicles (1873-1877) - Accordingly, Sherlock Holmes only attended two years of university; why this is remains a mystery. For Sherringford Basil, I felt he should complete four years. Oxford was a turning-point in his life. It was here where he decided to pursue a career as a detective, inspired by fellow undergraduate and friend, Oscar Milde.
  • Montague Street Revisited (1878-1881) - Before Basil was at Baker Street, he (like Holmes) originally lived a block away on Montague Street, just stone-throw from the British Museum, spending most of his time in study and training. The role of "Boswell" was filled by Oscar Milde and his cousin, Dr. Verner.
  • The Case-Book of the Great Mouse Detective (1881-1897) - Moving into his new rooms at Lower 221B Baker Street, he gained a reputation and cases began to file in by the hundreds. (This takes place before the film.)
  • The Return of the Great Mouse Detective (1897-1904) - After the "death" of Ratigan, idleness and restlessness took a toll on the detective's health until the outbreak of the criminal underground wars, which resulted in the succession of Captain Sebastian Doran (Ratigan's second-in-command) to Ratigan's throne. (This, if you haven't guessed, takes place directly after the film.)
  • His Last Bow (1904-1927) - Feeling that his powers had become dulled with his growing age, Basil retired quietly to the Sussex countryside. He excepts cases irregularly until the outbreak of the First World War, where the call of duty brought him out of retirement to the service of Great Britain.
  • The Rivals of the Great Mouse Detective (circa 1935) - The Great War is over, but another, worse than before, reproaches. Nowadays, the role of the "detective" has been carried over by his "disciples" into a new century.
  • Star Trek: Titus (2373-2375) - A sci-fi crossover of the Federation starship, USS Titus, during the Dominion War.
  • Dark Metropolis (circa 2100) - Another sci-fi crossover, one-shot pastiche, where Sherringford Basil comes back from the dead to stop a Professor Ratigan's evil clone in the 22nd century.
I am still debating about inserting a "pre-Oxford" section because Basil's childhood is so mysterious. They are primarily snippets (and/or flashbacks) into his dark existence at the family estate in Sussex, his family holidays in France, bleak boarding school, and Eton College.

So...what to you think?

Okay, I just divide it with titles:

* The Life and Times of Sherringford Basil
* Crossovers

Thank you. For the time being, it's going to be introduction because I have nasty habit of (over-)explaining myself and character profiles. The FAQ I've been working on for the past year is over 150 pages long, so I'll have to divide that into sections as well. I plan on webcomic, but who knows, I rarely do finished works. I'm hoping to purchase my own website address, but I can't seem to find a good server that I can afford. (sigh)

I KNOW! I need the space!

At the moment, the GMD website is a string of several free-hosting sites all in one! I ran out of room by the first 6 months I got it up.

This is wonderful. It's far cleaner than the old layout. Also I love how you stylised the fonts to work with each period. It definately helps continuity, it looks very professional.

MissCassidy In reply to tranimation-art [2007-11-16 09:19:41 +0000 UTC]

yeah but also the layout is better.

I guess you're going to hotlink to the various pages.

Hotlink from title (say Oxford for ex) ---> character bios
(these would be hotlinked) pastiches
art
Then say I choose character bios it would take me to another page that shows each character. I could scroll my mouse over them so for example if I wanted to see the bio of Oscar Milde, I could scroll over Oscar and click on him and get his bio.

It's still rather basic, but doable.

Yes, Oxford does light up and link you to the introduction page, where I explain is more detail of the overall time and place. And the events going outside England that will affect (directly or indirectly) Oxford stories. Below this will be two images, one linking to character profiles, another to pastiches. And the basic line up for profile page. Just as you say.

MissCassidy In reply to tranimation-art [2007-11-16 16:54:21 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm yeah

I was thinking tho you'd keep it really simple:

so say I click on Oxford
that takes me to the page which has
a) Historical Events for this period b) Character Profiles (Oxford Cast) c) Pastiched stories d) Art based on this period.

Wow, this is beyond awesome. I must say since knowing you in the GMD fandom, I've always felt you've possessed most of what Eve Titus would have intended for a background history on Basil of Baker Street! I mean, all we've got is the Titus series and the film, not a whole lot for some great literary characters if you ask me.

After I gave Barrie Ingham my GMD drawings as gift art, he decided to write a lavish and unforgettable phrase upon one of my autographs. He wrote, "For Sabrina, the honorary supreme leader of the Basil Society, my thanks and admiration for your art."

Leader? Yikes! I couldn't lead a horse to water! I could only grin to him, accepting that title as far as the knowledge I picked up on the original books and the GMD film itself! I think if Barrie knew how much dedicated work you've done with these characters, he'd give you a title of 'honorary supreme biographer of the Basil Society', or something catchy like that.

Awwwwwww, I'm SOOOOO looking forward to the package! I've been checking my mailbox constantly.

Well, I have disgree that the way write Basil is what Eve Titus would have intended -- because, in reality, it's not. I write Basil exactly as I would Sherlock Holmes. In the film, he isn't a "pupil" of Holmes -- he IS Holmes -- and, so, I treat him as such. I suppose I'm more a Sherlockian before I'm a Basilian. I have Basil deal with subjects that aren't kiddie-friendly, like drug addiction, sexuality, murder, rape, psychology and sociology, etc. Nevetheless, I love history. I'm not the only Sherlockian and/or Basilian guilty of "namedropping," lol, but I try to make it as shameless as possible, to give them a strong, capable role into the story than just appear/disappear.

You're a "leader" -- you're one of the few leaders of Basiliana of today! Go Barrie! (snuggles him)

Package? What package? Oooh, are you getting something from someone?

After reading the books, I felt there was so much that could be done with the characters. I've said before that I would love to see the books in animated form, but more towards in the direction of the film, meaning there'd have to be some changes to them. I, too, feel that Basil is Holmes in mouse form, not learning how to do detective work at the foot of the human himself! I think that's something Disney wanted to have in their film...heh, I think that's why he can play the violin so beautifully!

As for Barrie, he should be our leader of the Basilian Society! After all, he IS Basil, er, in human form, that is!

There IS a great deal of leeway in the Titus Canon, partly because it's children's book series and partly because Titus purposely made it that way.

I would also prefer the books -- well, the first book, at least -- in animation form, as well; and, yes, in the direction of the film. I love the fact that film takes the stories into the more Doylean/Holmesian manner than a Titus one. It goes to show how immortal Holmes will always be to the world. (I should send you some of an interview of Ron Clements and John Musker, they intended to make Basil AS Holmes and Ratigan AS Moriarty; they are both one and the same -- just in different worlds. Well, yes, in Titus Canon, Basil is, ironically, good flutist.)

Barrie, our leader! (plays Young Sherlock Holmes soundtrack of "Waxing Elizabeth")

I love the way this looks - very neat and clean, easy to navigate, and yet with just enough flourish.
