Description
"We must suffer for our art in order to achieve perfection..."Beijing Opera is deemed as the highest form of national quintessence, presenting an encyclopaedia of Chinese history, rich culture, and artistic expression through an unique art of drama, music, poetry, singing, speaking, beautiful paintings, breathtaking costumes, graceful gestures, pantomime, stunts, and acrobatics. Actors utilise the skills of speech, song, dance, and combat in movements that are symbolic and suggestive — and, above all, beautiful.
Liu Lian (surname before forename) was the daughter of Shanghai-born Liu Fang-Yuan, the superstar of the Four Great An-Hwei Beijing Opera and noted "Beau Brummel" of the Orient, and Hong Kong-born Xiao Ai-Shi, an acrobat of the Wu-Han Circus Troupe. His father, a descendent from a line of operatic actors, was a superlative singer, actor, dancer, and female impersonator. (He was also an unfortunate opium addict.) Although an ancient law prohibited women on stage (set up by Qian-Long Emperor in 1772), her mother regularly performed for the opera, ironically, impersonating male roles.
Under their tutelage, Liu Lian began her militant and rigorous, almost mediaeval, training at the age of seven, where she endured an incredible regimen of abuse and discipline in acting, music, voice, make-up, dance, acrobatics, and combat. She performed formally on stage at the age of twelve, starring as the lead female roles. As the relationships between China and their neighbouring countries soured, however, Liu was "obliged" to spy under the advisement of her government as she toured, with the An-Hwei troupe, to Japan (twice), Soviet Union (twice), Europe, and America. She worked briefly for the powerful Zhang Zuo-Lin, the supreme ruler (and warlord) of Manchuria, until his assassination by the Japanese in 1928. She was recruited a year later by the International Criminal Police Commission (ICPC), aiming to provide an unique range of essential services for the law enforcement community whose mission is detecting, preventing, and suppressing crime on a global scale. Miss Liu remains one of their top international secret agents whose assignments and activities are shrouded in mystery, through her exotic Pacific Rim adventures against villainous masterminds, violent cut-throats, and designing warlords — and is sometimes partnered with a Japanese ICPC agent, Moto Kentaro.
---
Beijing Opera training is extremely brutal, where children are taken away from their families, routinely beaten and abused, and pushed to their limits to instil mastery of this specialised form of art. This is Miss Liu in Beijing Opera costume as a dan qing yi (the elitist female role), ready to perform a water sleeves (or long sleeves) dance. Her head-dress did not come out the way I wanted; I'm suffering from insomnia, therefore I'm not really in a position to really care too much about it. I was more concerned about her expression — and the fact I could draw her at all despite my lack of sleep. Check out Beijing Opera clips of Li Sheng-Su's Dadengdian, Leslie Cheung's Farewell My Concubine, Li Yu-Gang's Shin Gui Fei Zui Jiu, and a Water Sleeve Dance on YouTube.
The bird on head-dress is that of a mythological feng huang (phoenix). It's believed that each part of feng huang's body symbolizes a word — the head represents virtue, the wing represents duty, the back represents propriety, the abdomen says belief, and the chest represents mercy. It is also the symbol of immortality; the phoenix (in the head-dress) is burning itself in a fire to be rise from the ashes reborned.
(Zi, ji, yin is Chinese for "Beauty, skill, and art.")

I like Klingon Opera, too, although I don't understand a word of it -- same with Italian and German Opera (but I can at least be easily translated through a program). Klingon...don't have a program for that.

My favourite Star Trek music, the flute theme to "Inner Light". I love how it was done in the episode "Lessons", with the piano and flute duet .

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your words; it really means a lot to me. I'm very happy you like her and her background. She'll also be going through the events Second-Japanese War, Japanese Occupation, Kuomintang regime, 1949 Liberation as the People's Liberation Army enters her hometown, Shanghai, and the Cultural Revolution, when the Chinese Opera became persecuted...even executed. Her relationship with Moto Kentaro becomes quite stranded as these events come to power.

tranimation-art In reply to Vampiressartist [2008-05-30 07:03:53 +0000 UTC]
This requires a lengthy explaination: I divide Basil's life into volumes. Sherlock Holmes' stories were divided into several volumes -- Adventures, Return, Memoirs, His Last Bow. For GMD, there's the "Life and Times of Sherringford Basil" -- Oxford University Chronicles, Montague Street Revisited, Casebook of the Great Mouse Detective, Adventures of the Great Mouse Detective (the film), Return of the Great Mouse Detective, His Last Bow, and Rivals of the Great Mouse Detective.
There is an anthology called Rivals of Sherlock Holmes, with detectives like Father Brown and Arsene Lupin. whom were Holmes' Victorian comtemporaries! Rivals of the Great Mouse Detective is loosely based on that takes place in the 1930s, between the two world wars, and is already retired to a farm in Sussex.
1930s had a boom of detective fiction, known better as the Golden Age of Detective Fiction, with characters like Hercule Poirot, Lord Peter Wimsey, Sam Spade, Nick and Nora Charles, Mr. Moto, etc. These are characters are offshoots of Sherlock Holmes, thus the mouse-versions are offshoots of Basil of Baker Street. They are his DISCIPLES who learned the art of deduction from The Master! And, of course, Basil pops his head occasionally into their lives and cases. THIS is a character in particular from Rivals, Liu Lian, who is supporting character of Mr. Moto character, a detective and spy. (Mr. Moto predates James Bond.) I suppose you can say she's a supporting character of a supporting character.

Liu Lian is for Rivals of the Great Mouse Detective, taking place in the 1930s, between two world wars and Basil, at this time, is retired in Sussex. These "rivals" are his discipiles, those detectives who learned from the Master Mouse Detective and carried on his work to the new century. Miss Liu is a detective and spy, along with Mr. Moto.
You're probably mistaken her from her Victorian Asian mice -- Lady Silverson...or Mei-Lien, her maid. They would be part of Return of the Great Mouse Detective, taking place after the Disney film.

Oh, she's simply beautiful, and as usual, I love your description for each piece. Different cultures are so fascinating to read. Coming from my POV, I see nothing wrong with the head-dress, in fact, it's very detailed and quite...Oriental! The eyes have it, though, the best part in this picture. Beautiful, Asian eyes.

Awwww...thank you! The head-dress represents "immortality". Phoenix burning itself in a funeral pyre and/or rising up again reborn from the flames. Traditional Chinese head-dresses are so complex in design! There's so much! And I had to over-simplify it...because I'm lazy that way.
...and the hardest thing for me to capture for Miss Liu is her eyes. I'm glad you like her eyes. It took a few erases to get that.
I love learning about world cultures, too!

Oh, I didn't know about that with the head-dress! Need to brush up on my Chinese history. It's been an ongoing chore of getting eyes on characters to look perfect, so yup, I've worn down an eraser many times! But, she's beautiful, you did awesome!

tranimation-art In reply to Brinatello [2008-02-01 05:24:48 +0000 UTC]
Phoenix (feng huang) would be part of mythology, actually. It's my favourite immortal being.
Eyes, I feel, is the most important part of the character. Eyes are windows into the soul of the character. You can mess up anything else -- hands, mouth, hair, posture, etc -- but if you mess up the eyes, the entire character falls to pieces; you can make or break a character simply due to eyes. And that's my "eye speech"...
Thank you again.

mpty spaces - what are we living for?
Abandoned places - I guess we know the score..
On and on!
Does anybody know what we are looking for?
Another hero - another mindless crime.
Behind the curtain, in the pantomime.
Hold the line!
Does anybody want to take it anymore?
The Show must go on!
The Show must go on!
Inside my heart is breaking,
My make-up may be flaking,
But my smile, still, stays on!
Whatever happens, I'll leave it all to chance.
Another heartache - another failed romance.
On and on!
Does anybody know what we are living for?
I guess i'm learning
I must be warmer now..
I'll soon be turning round the corner now.
Outside the dawn is breaking,
But inside in the dark I'm aching to be free!
The Show must go on!
The Show must go on! Yeah!
Ooh! Inside my heart is breaking!
My make-up may be flaking!
But my smile, still, stays on!
Yeah! oh oh oh
My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies,
Fairy tales of yesterday, will grow but never die,
I can fly, my friends!
The Show must go on! Yeah!
The Show must go on!
I'll face it with a grin!
I'm never giving in!
On with the show!
I'll top the bill!
I'll overkill!
I have to find the will to carry on!
On with the,
On with the show!
The Show must go on.
