Ryder walked into Hugo’s shop and dumped his bag on the counter. His Sandshrew jumped from his shoulder on to the counter and began sorting some of the gems and minerals. “As promised.” Ryder said looking at his Portal.
“Got plans tonight?” Hugo asked typing something on his computer.
“Yeah, I’m going to go get a shower and head out.”
“Here, take a clean shirt.” Hugo said tossing a shirt at Ryder. Ryder caught it in his hands. It was black and had Hugo’s logo in neon green on the front. Hugo saw him reading it. “I’ll be your sponsor tonight. I could use some business.”
“It’s the least I can do. Thanks.” Ryder smiled as his Sandshrew jumped on to his shoulder and he walked out of the shop.
Later…
People were all heading to a large nightclub in the heart of Neo Under City. Ryder was among them lining up at the backdoor with all of the competitors; he was one of the first in line. Ryder stepped inside allowed to sit in the lounge where a monitor was set up broadcasting the main room of the nightclub. Everyone was walking around, dancing, laughing, and drinking. Ryder sat back examining his launcher feeling anxious.
“Let’s make some noise Neo Under City!” The DJ shouted. The music in the club cut out. Everyone filed off the main stage cheering as they knew what came next. Neon flowed through the floor creating a battlefield. Everyone in the club was dawning glow sticks and other flashy apparel lighting up the dark. “All of Neo Under is here to participate tonight. Let’s give our seasoned trainers their due and give our first timers some pity because it’s going to be a rough night!” Everyone was cheering. “You hear that? It’s time to get started!”
A bouncer walked into the lounge with a tablet in his hand. He looked around. “You and you.” He pointed to two trainers. “Let’s go.” Ryder looked down still feeling anxious. He was nervous, but excited waiting for his turn. He was paying close attention to the monitor waiting for the battle to start.
At the same time…
People were enjoying the life of the Neo Lights Club from the high rollers lounge on the second floor balcony of the club. They were laughing, talking, drinking, and eating; their Pokémon were doing the same. A crash came from the door. No one saw what came next. A flash of red is all anyone could make out as they were rendered unconscious from the lightning fast attacks.
A boy stood at the door grinning. He had silver-colored hair and a silver vest. He wore black pants and black boots with a silver trim; there was a launcher on his arm. Goggles covered his eyes. He pulled them up grabbing a drink off the bar counter. “Even Saok has its upper class.” He downed the drink tossing the glass at the wall watching it shatter. He walked to the balcony leaning over it to watch the battle taking place. A Scizor joined him. The boy pulled out a holographic lens fixing it over his eye. “Steel reporting in.”
There was a large ship in the sky. A girl sat at a large computer console typing away. When she heard the voice, she immediately shifted her attention alerting several people of the transmission. “Long time since we’ve heard from you, Steel.”
“Just doing my job. Hope you’re picking up this feed.”
“Indeed I am.” The girl was receiving video feed of the Neo Lights Club. She was also arranging someone to intercept Steel at the club. He had been missing for a long time.
Ryder sat in the club watching the monitor. “And Raichu is unable to battle. The winner is Cryogonal.”
“You, you’re up.” The bouncer turned to Ryder. He stood up walking out of the lounge, through the cheering crowd of the club, and on to the battlefield. Steel was watching from his balcony downing another drink and throwing the glass behind him.
Ryder looked at the pokeball in his launcher. “Okay, Sandshrew. Let’s rock.” Ryder pointed his launcher at the field pulling the trigger and sending out his Pokémon.
“Haven’t seen your face around here before, newbie.” Ryder’s opponent called out.
“This is my debut, and I’m going to start strong. Sandshrew, use shadow claw!” The Pokémon ran down the field at incredible speed jumping up high and swiping at Cryogonal with claws infused with darkness. Cryogonal cringed recoiling from the attack.
“Not bad.” Steel turned to his Scizor who nodded its head in agreement.
“Gyro ball while it’s down.” Ryder called out. His Sandshrew started rolling at the Pokémon picking up speed knocking it back.
“Cryogonal, use blizzard!” The Pokémon started unleashing a blast of cold.
“Sandshrew, use dig!” Ryder called out quickly watching his Pokémon hide underground away from the attack. “Shadow claw, straight up!” Ryder ordered. His Pokémon jumped up high striking the Cryogonal at one of its weak points causing it to faint.
“Winner!” The DJ announced excitedly. “Let’s keep the battles coming. Newbie has our attention.”
“That little runt has some bite.” Steel was watching the battles continue intently.
Maybe Steel did find someone good. The girl watching on the other end was now fixed on the battle.
The battles were raging on. Ryder and his Sandshrew were going strong, but a lack of time to recover was getting to them. “Sandshrew, shadow claw from underground!”
“I’m not falling for that trick. Blastoise, skull bash!” The Pokémon knocked Sandshrew into the air. “Hit it with hydro pump and end this!” Sandshrew was blasted across the club hitting a wall.
“And Ryder’s streak is over!” The crowd booed and cheered with mixed emotion. Ryder ignored them running across the club to retrieve his Pokémon.
“Good job out there.” Ryder recalled his Pokémon. Someone led him to a backroom where there was a healing machine set up. Ryder placed his pokeball on the machine healing his Pokémon.
Steel left the balcony kicking one of the stirring trainers in the side keeping them unconscious.
Ryder walked out of the club running his hands through his hair. “Not a bad night.” Ryder looked at the time on his Portal. It was late for anyone else, but the night was still young for anyone living in Neo Under City.
“Not bad at all.” The boy known as Steel walked out of the shadows. “How about we battle?”
“Who are you?” Ryder had his launcher aimed at him.
“People call me Steel.” He aimed his launcher at Ryder pulling the trigger. “And I’m battling you whether you want to or not. Show me what that little runt can do.” Steel’s Scizor stood by him crossing its claws.
“Sandshrew, get ready for round two.” Ryder pulled the trigger on his launcher sending out his Sandshrew.
“Let’s make this battle no mercy.” Steel had a sadistic grin on his face. He reached into one of his boots pulling out a tactical knife. A keystone was embedded into the blade. “Scizor, mega evolve!” He grabbed hold of the stone transmitting his energy to his Pokémon forcing it to evolve. Steel tucked the knife away. “Now, we can battle.”
“Sandshrew, dig!”
“X-scissor.” Steel said calmly. His Pokémon moved quickly knocking Ryder’s Sandshrew to the ground. “Thought that would be a one shot.” Steel said watching the Sandshrew stand back up.
“Rollout!” Ryder called out. His Pokémon curled into a ball hurling down the field at Scizor who dodged it with ease. Sandshrew however was still picking up speed as it turned around hitting Scizor from behind. It came in for another attack, but the Scizor blocked it with a claw. “Shadow claw!” Ryder’s Sandshrew struck Scizor in the face making it recoil.
Steel cringed feeling a sharp pain. “Use night slash.” Steel seemed angry tightening his fist. His Scizor slashed Sandshrew sending it flying. “Pick it up in your claw and give it a metal claw with the other.” Scizor leapt into the air picking up Sandshrew and punching it with its other claw sending it to the ground. It was laying on the ground hardly able to move. “End it with x-scissor.”
Ryder watched in horror as it prepared the attack. He ran on to the field ready to take the attack for his partner.
Suddenly, there was wind around the field. Ryder remained down protecting his Pokémon. “Long time no see, Steel.” A female voice spoke piloting a gyrocopter. Steel recognized the redhead and sighed. Ryder stood up looking at the green vehicle. A Yanmega swooped down grabbing Steel. His Scizor returned to its regular form recalling itself.
Steel put on his goggles smiling. “Sorry, we couldn’t finish this now.” He landed in the copter leaning back. “Miss me, Zoey?”
“Almost.” She turned to her Pokémon. “Sleep powder.” It dusted Steel with the powder rendering him asleep. “I still don’t trust you. Yanmega return.” She recalled her Pokémon. “Time to get out of here.” She started flying upward.
“Hey!” Ryder called out recalling his own Pokémon who would be needing medical attention.
“Sorry kid, Steel’s got other problems to deal with.” She flew off into one of the higher caverns to navigate her way to the surface.
A while later…
Steel woke up rubbing his head. He looked down pulling off the blanket. Someone had changed his clothes to shorts and a t-shirt. He saw his launcher on the nightstand along with his Scizor in its pokeball and his goggles which were gray with orange lenses. He knew the signal was being jammed. There was a small table in the room with a pitcher of juice on top with several berries floating in it and a glass next to it filled with the same juice. He walked over to the table and picked up the glass.
At that moment, a girl walked into the room wearing a captain’s uniform, her hair in pigtails. “Steel, Declan wants to…” She paused watching Steel pick up the glass and hold his finger up signaling her to be quiet.
He sipped slowly soon downing the glass very quickly. The girl was about to continue, but Steel kept his finger up throwing the glass at the wall letting it shatter. The girl cringed. Steel picked up the pitcher and started drinking straight from it. He finished off the pitcher and threw it against the wall letting it shatter as well. The girl cringed again. “Sorry, but when you live like a savage in the wild, dehydration sometimes gets the better of you.” Steel wiped off his mouth. “Did you bathe me?”
“Declan likes his ship clean, including the people on it.” The girl spoke. “And he wants to see you, now.”
“Then why are we keeping him waiting?” Steel strapped his launcher to his arm and put his goggles on his head following the girl into the hallway.
“They were right about you.”
“What did they say?” Steel put his arms behind his head calmly showing a relaxed demeanor.
“How wild you are.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment.” Steel followed the girl to a large private suite. She opened one of the large, wooden double doors letting Steel enter first following behind him and letting the door close.
A boy about the same age as Steel sat in a chair wearing a suit petting a Luxray. “Haven’t heard from you in a while, Steel. And no matter how many times I bring you back and release you, you pull out your tracker and ditch it somewhere. Then Zoey told me you were engaged in battle with a trainer who according to the feed you sent might actually become a decent competitor in my tournament.”
“If he can’t beat me, he can’t beat you. Then again, most Saok trainers only have three Pokémon, maybe. Food is scarce and so are Pokémon.”
“I’m very aware. What I don’t get is why you’re so disobedient.”
“I’ve done my job. I’ve scouted trainers for you, but I don’t need to follow the rules set by some spoiled rich kid who can’t find a trainer strong enough to beat him!” Steel had his fists clenched his tone was very stern.
“I made you and I can break you.”
“I made myself and you gave me a job. And Saok has only made me stronger.”
The girl jabbed Steel with a stun gun. “You need to calm down.”
“Megan, I could have handled him.” Declan sighed. “Take him back to his room. Let him relax for a bit and let Zoey know where he is. She’ll want to talk to him.”
“Yes sir.” She saluted Declan and started escorting Steel out of the room. He was clutching his side in pain.
