SEASON ONE - SEASON TWO - THE MOVIE†

BEGINNINGS 1998 - 2000

When I did my original IRONHIDE icon, I was not mindful of the fact that he had two slightly different designs, both of which can in fact already be seen in the pilot episode. I know a version of this was made in the spring of 1998, but the date is currently lost to me. The earliest take on it of which I can be sure dates back to January of 1999. I must say that I prefer this edgier, slightly tougher rendition of his face. Due to the rounded nature of his helmet, he -- and, by extension, RATCHET, who shares most of his features -- was one of my earliest "nightmares." I have said and repeated through my many entries that my way with curves is anything but facile. This tough guy is almost all arcs and curves. I also made his eyes too big in the beginning, though they would eventually prove appropriately sized, just inhabiting too small a surrounding face. By 2000, he was beginning to lose the amateurishness of the earlier attempts and remained that way until I decided to overhaul the entire character gallery.

SECOND WIND 2007 - 2011

In 2007, I began using screen shots in earnest, many of which were from THE IMMOBILIZER, his showcase episode. It helped me straighten out many details, enhance his colours, and make his "mohawk" more prominent. However, those increasingly ineffective diagonal lines I had used to create a sense of metallic shine remained entrenched because, as much as I wanted to do it, I was uncertain I would be able to shade the characters on a level similiarly to what was seen on the TV series. I finally braved that challenge in 2009, also making him considerably larger to make way for much better detailing and proportioning. The introduction of the simple notion of featuring complete necks and an increasing concentration on scale resulted in another update two years later, which, in turn, was tweaked even further into the current version.
