Description
I designed this creature in a week for a class assignment! The prompt was to make a creature or object based on a plant, and at the time I had recently run across the fun fact of albino trees, and how they cannot make their own food as they lack green chlorophyll/chloroplast to absorb light with. To survive, these trees dig into the root systems of neighbors of their own kind to steal nutrients from them, like vampires. So, I created a dark legend told amongst trees, of an albino tree that did just that, draining the life from its kin. Desperate to rid themselves of the parasitic evergreen, they whispered to a woodsman walking through their forest, luring him to the beautiful white tree and urging him to chop it down. He did just that, dragging the fallen tree away, and the woods sighed a relief, believing they were finally free.
However, one cold night, as the first snow of winter began to fall, a strange wooden puppet stumbled through their forest, half carved in the shape of a crow. It was as stark white as the snow that had began to cover the forest floor, and its pale, dead pine needles rustled with quiet hate. Upturned roots held the crow’s head up with puppet strings as the disguised tree took in its traitorous family, and, honing in on a fragile sapling, it crawled close to dig its talons in, draining the life from it before violently ripping it from the earth. To this day the trees rustle its story, how it continues to wander from forest to forest, kept alive by malice and the ‘blood’ of its own kind, never satisfied with its revenge.
