I workinig over the ideas of the Droideka of Star Wars fame...and something irked me...its based on an insectoid species...the Colicoids. But, it doesn't really have that fear factor involved visually. And I was thinking...could Droidekas have more capacities than what was shown in the movies? I know from doing some research through Star Wars HyperSpace and Wookiepedia...and nearly 10 years of reading Star Wars that the Droideka has many variants and version and capacities not shown in the movies.

Videogames have a couple versions of Droideka...including a massively upscaled version that literally has full scale laser cannons and a very powerful shield. [Only downside it can only have the shield or cannons activated at one time.] There is also a Droideka Mk II...of Forces of Corruption fame, with blaster cannons and ion cannons included with the shield. There is the Bio-Cannon from Galactic Battlegrounds which a Droideka like system...that houses a massive long range artillery cannon. [Trade Federation only]

Books have some interesting notes on Droidekas as well. Outbound Flight...and books centered around it post Battle of Yavin. Talk about how Droidekas were put on the Jedi planned trans-galactic mission to another galaxy, before Darth Sidious knocks it off and Thrawn shows up in the Star Wars Canon pre-Episode II. The Droidekas were planned as colony defenders, but they note a particularly interesting technique only found in the books attributed to Droidekas...A Droideka can carry out a rolling burst on the roll. This allows it to suppress opponents on the roll, and then when it closes range to suddenly deploy and put sustained fire on target behind shields.

So concept was to design variants to the Droideka not only for offensive considerations, but also in line with its designers Colicoids looks. Going more bio-organic, however, also giving the Droideka more shocking attacks.

One of the variants is a suicide version of the Droideka...basically a war-weary Droideka striped of most systems and designed to roll up to a target and detonate both its reactor and onboard explosives. Versions like rocket armed, and expanded shield versions were also considered for further increasing the utilitarian concept for the Droideka.
