I learned when it comes to drawing yourself as a cartoon/caricature the important part is just to get the essence of yourself. Basically abstract yourself. I look very much like that, but there are some things exaggerated or downplayed in it.

The best thing to do so you don't look like you're poshing yourself is to take an already existing quality and exaggerating it and having it define your "character."
Like I tend to look pissed off often (I'm not really an angry person), so I made the "everything makes me mad" expression my avatar's defining quality. Usually if you stick with what you got instead of adding on what isn't there it makes you seem modest without being boring. :]
Because let's be honest, we all know someones hiding something when they have angel wings, rainbow spouting from their head, super toned out bodies, and/or other ridiculous add on. XD
