Description
Mundo Perdido PenguinSize: 55cm in height
Diet: Fish and cephalopods.
Description: A more recent immigrant of these islands is the Mundo Perdido penguin (Spheniscus tropicus), a species of banded penguin. It feeds in the shallow sea rich in prey that divides the two main halves of the partially sunken island, as well as in the islands’ estuaries. Its appearance is similar to other banded penguins, and its closest relative (quite literally) is the Galapagos penguin; the two species are visibly indistinguishable and the Mundo Perdido penguin may actually be a subspecies classification within it. Similar to Galapagos penguins, they mate for life and form nesting colonies. Although they can be found on the two main islands, they usually nest on the much smaller islands where there are fewer land predators that can prey on them or their eggs. When threatened by a predator, they can spray half-digested seafood, the disgusting odor is usually enough to ward them off. Mundo Perdido penguins tend to be much more intolerant of interlopers into their territory; especially when nesting. Young grow remarkably quick, fed with a mixture of semi-digested seafood and crop milk, as an adaption to the higher mortality rates for chicks here than in the Galapagos.
