The Dart name originally appeared on a 1956 Chrysler showcar' featuring a streamlined body designed by the Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Ghia' that was later modified and renamed the Dart Diablo.

The production Dart was introduced as a lower-priced fullsize dodge, in 1960 and 1961, became a mid-size, for 1962, and then was a compact between 1963 to 1976, in 1969 The 2-door sedan was dropped at the end of 1968 and replaced with the Swinger 2-door hardtop for 1969 available in Custom, GT, and GTS trim. Also added was the Swinger 340.
