EDIT:

Previous version of this tutorial was submitted over a year ago I decided it's time to update it I edited some parts, adding more details to my explanation. Hope you don't mind being notified about all five parts

---------------------------------------

As you can see, after several months of making promises, I finally finished my vectoring tutorial It’s my first tutorial ever, English is not my native language and I suck it explaining things, so it’s not prefect but at least I did my best. I hope this will help people to start their own vector gallery, be it on dA or anywhere else.

This tutorial was strongly influenced by Unmei’s Tracing Tutorial on Ferricorp.Com. I learned how to vector from him. It’s a good, beginner-friendly tutorial and so far I was linking it to all people who asked me for vectoring guidelines but one day I decided to make my own version [longer, a little more detailed, with a few of pieces of advice and my own thoughts].

If there are any parts you find unclear, please don’t hesitate to note me. I’ll try to explain it for you once again in different words, if possible. Also, I’ll be more than happy to see your own vectors, made with the help of this tutorial. ^.^

I’d like to thank =Realm-Of-The-Shadows for checking my spelling and grammar Any mistakes you find in the text above is my fault as I added some last-minute explanation right before submitting the tutorial. Please don’t hesitate to note me about them and I’ll correct it

It’s also the right place to say ‘thank you’ to all my watchers who offered their help as beta-testers In the end I didn’t have time to ask you for your opinions before submission and I’m sorry about that  If you still feel like helping me, please tell me what you think after reading this tutorial.

Disclaimer:
Vectoring screenshots and scans [in other words: tracing them directly line by line] is against dA policy. As far as I know, if someone reports your vector trace while providing original screenshot/scan you used, it will be removed from your gallery. That’s why I encourage you to treat screenshot/scan vectors only as a form of practice before you move on to more complicated things. You can vector your own drawings and sketches, other people’s linearts and/or drawings [after asking them for permission, of course], realistic photos [photo traces are allowed, as realistic trace demands more time, skills and creativity than anime ones] – or images combined from several screenshots [as I sometimes do].

In other words - please keep in mind that when you submit screenshot/scan vector trace to your gallery, you do that at your own risk. According to dA policy, it doesn't belong here: it should stay on your hard disk. My intention isn't to encourage you to trace and I take no responsibility if you decide to submit a direct vector trace to dA.

Thank you so much for the wonderful tutorial! ^_^ I've been stumped about vectoring, especially on the lineart. This was really helpful!

one question how do you put the backround and the shadows? I can´t TT_TT and thanks that will help me n_n

The method of making the shadows is explained in the 'Coloring' part of my tutorial ;] What you put in the background is entirely up to you In case of Sakura I simply applied a gradient and a flower brush

Wow, this tutorial's great c: I tried vectoring for the first time yesterday from the tutorial you learned from, and right after I finished you posted this xD

Ah well, this clears up everything the other left me a little confused about. I think I'll give it another go as soon as I get some free time x.x I thought it was pretty fun c: I picked it up fairly quickly, both yours and that other tutorial were very helpful :3 Thanks

tutorial wygląda świetnie, przejrzysty i dobrze wszystko wytłumaczone. Mam nadzieję, ze sprawdzi się w praktyce

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tsukishoujo In reply to naive-ann [2008-01-06 00:46:34 +0000 UTC]

A tak w ogóle to czemu Ty masz za 2 tygodnie ferie a ja nie? ;_;

WOO!!!! You finally made one. There was a part with the "convert point" tool that I've never heard about before. That will help a lot when using the pen tool, as I always had to make 2 anchor points near each other at tips of hair to keep the line sharp. ^_^ "be prepared for at least 1 or 2 hours work"...I do about 3 sometimes...mind you, that's when I'm vectoring my OC...another inspiration from you. ^_^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tsukishoujo In reply to sparkjolt [2008-01-06 02:32:06 +0000 UTC]

1 or 2 hours is a minimum Usually it takes me around 3-4 hours, counting the background

Thank you I'm happy to hear that I was an inspiration

This is a very detailed and good tutorial ! I love it.
I've learnt some good techniques thanks to you !
Nice to see that, like me, you don't name your layers XD
It is such a mess for me but I'm too lazy to take the time to name my layers :3 It's nice to compare our different techniques, habits, indeed. ^^

tsukishoujo In reply to ut0pie [2008-01-06 02:31:01 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much ^^ Yeah even if I name my layers I never make use of those names xD It's not helping me

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Wslasher [2008-01-02 10:11:30 +0000 UTC]

I was looking @ your layer pallet & I got dizzy! What I like to do is to name each layer to avoid confusion. Guess you don't get that confused like I do when it comes to layer arrangement. haha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tsukishoujo In reply to Wslasher [2008-01-02 10:19:25 +0000 UTC]

I always arrange them in the same way [eyes' colors-lineart-shadows on the hair-main hair color - shadows on the face - main face color-etc.] so I know where to look when I want to activate one particular layer Saishuu-hinoiri on the other hand can't work without layers being named and organized into groups

It's funny to observe how vector artists work ^^ It's seems that we all do the same thing but the methods are sometimes completely different

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Wslasher In reply to tsukishoujo [2008-01-02 10:57:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, guess we each have our own styles & techniques.
