Another part of my English final..

This picture refers back to an older practice: Chinese Foot Binding. Foot Binding was an ancient practice where the feet were wrapped to prevent growth. In the past, it was a sign of status and beauty; however, as a result, the toes get folded in making it practically impossible for women to walk. Women were made into dolls. (Then again, women were subservient in the past, so this practice seems reasonable).

Still, it's a little distressing to think that these extreme practices are still prominent today; morphing the body against its natural shape is not limited to the past. Corset training, super-sizing, even the Kylie Jenner Challenge - if these practices don't leave our bodies bruised and battered, they leave them disabled. Daily physical activities become a struggle, and like Foot Binding, the bodies become capable of only posing for the camera. A sign of beauty. A figurine.

It's difficult to completely disregard society's standards of beauty and accept the differences they call flaws. Pressure from society makes it difficult. I, myself, am influenced by expectations and judgements. But, I still see real strength and real beauty in those who can overcome those pressures. I admire those who work with the bodies they were born with. We were all born different, individually. There is no need to create our own individuality when it's already within us. Our purpose is to find it, not make it.

It's rather difficult to summarize my entire final into a description, so some ideas may seem a little vague. I hope it's still understandable. This is the last picture I'll be posting - hope the ideas were interesting!
