I asked my father and he said that they aren't that dangerous. The vikings used them like drugs, to prepare for battle, or something like that ;]

yep, they produce a hallucinating substance, which is toxic at higher dosage
the name fly agaric is because farmers used these to make a potion from which the flies couldn't resist drinking, killing them due to the poison. That way they got rid of all those nasty flies. Also, witches used these in rituals, to get high off them by rubbing these mushrooms (moshed) under their armpits.

there is a method where you can cook it, and the toxic chemical (name I don't remember off my head but it's spelled similar to isopropyl, lol.) and it breaks down to muscarine.

yeah, but it's pretty trippy. i went hunting for some while i was in michigan just recently (i'm from florida so i don't see them down here) and didn't find any. they have a long history of shamanic use dating back from when the vedas was written and lots of different european and indian tribes used to eat them.
