Description
Snorting loudly as the hostile trees swallowed him, Obsidian nevertheless continued his canter for several long minutes, determined to leave the dogs behind even at the expense of entering the dense pine wood, a place that would have made him uncomfortable even if he was in familiar country. And being a long way from 'home', this wouold have been the last place he would have ventured, if he'd had the choice.Still, he was here now, and after several more moments cantering, he hesitantly slowed to a walk, before finally halting and listening all around. The silence under the boughs was almost suffocating to Obsidian but it did mean he could hear anything approaching, and as he was faced at that moment with just silence, he assumed he was safe, for now at least.
Breathing a heavy sigh of relief, he began to walk on again, heading what he believed was north through the thick, dense wood. For a time all that could be heard were his muffled hoofbeats on the forest floor - until, gradually, another sound caught his attention, making his ears go forward in anticipation.
The sound now reaching him was a gently whooshing, fluid kind of sound; one any sensible horse would know instantly. Snorting softly, he picked up his pace to a trot, and hurried through the close-knit trees, until finally he emerged into daylight at the bank of a freely flowing river.
Though relieved to see water, for he was still tired and had had no chance to drink yet, his initial reaction at the sight of the river was - "Oh!" for the glittering surface stretched quite wide, and appeared deep, and it was flowing at a decent speed. But more than that, Obsidian was not overly fond of water, and had so far managed to avoid river crossings on his journey, until now.
But this river was on the path he had been mentally planning to take, and being naturally somewhat ratger stubborn, he found himself unwilling to turn away from his goal and follow the warer up or downstream. Which only left one other option...
Slowly approaching the edge of the bank, he lowered his head and stretched his neck down to drink, before lifting his head to eye his surroundings once more, before finally making up his mind. He eyed the shining surface of the river sceptically one last time, before trotting forwards and plunging into the cold water without further hesitation.
For a second the current tugged strongly at him, then his feet hit the riverbed and he kicked out strongly, making determindly for the opposite bank - and his onward path to find a new home...

Awesome story! I just joined the Yesterday but I'm having trouble coming up with a design idea for my stallion. So far I just have a name for him. His name is Lion.
