Description
Final version of a design for a landmark to be placed at the Scheldt-river in Antwerp.I just got back from my jury, which was more than nice. They liked the concept and how I worked it out.
The aive spaces, and using one geometrical volume.
The five spaces each had to link to placessignment was to design a landmark (folly) containing fs seen from the scene: Antwerp city, Antwerp Harbor, the Sky, Antwerp Linkeroever ("beach" on the other side of the river) and the near environment.
The material to use was concrete, no specifications.
My design:
I make use of an internal element with a shell around it. Between the volume inside and its shell the circulation takes place. The central volume is placed out of center so when circulation around it different proportions of scale are discovered. When moving through the building links are made to what will come and what has been on your way through it.
In the ending point of this circulation the Sky space is entered. This space existst of a bowl which is surrounded by the outer shell. This way you can't look at what is around the place, only to the surrounding sky. The center of this room is placed in the center of the entire building, this way a concentric situation is restored.
I tried to make a circulation through the massive building (almost sculpture), where you can feel the weight of the building. Therefor the outer shell has thick walls.
When returning and walking backward you will descover new views which were not visible when going upward, little balconies give a wide viewing angle.
