Description
A popular trope of Alt History is the "northern secession" scenario, in which the free state become too tired of Slave Power dominating the federal government and band together to form the "Free States of America" (or Allied States, or Federal States, etc...)
The background usually is that the federal government fails to settle the Oregon County dispute in favor of the North, and that Mexico lost more of its northern territories + the plan to purchase Cuba goes through
The Northern Free states secede with Britain help, alongside California - The red line marks the division of the old western territories, and Britain as a sign of good will transfers most of the old Oregon County to the new Free States to give them access to the Pacific. Britain and France also intervene to help a slave rebellion/revolution in Cuba (note Guantanamo is leased).
The French, who are historically in Mexico, aid the govt of Maximillian in reacquiring its old northern territories, and latter purchase Baja from the New California Republic
