Description one of a series of illustrations I did for "black jack" a fantasy novel by Andy Witham. the "book" was released exclusively in digital format, and all the illustrations moved (think the constantly moving photographs and paintings in the Harry Potter universe) so many of the pieces I ended up having to draw as individual components that could be manipulated, which in turn were then given to the project animator.

this is the third member of a trio our young protagonist runs into during his adventure (see the other two here). Needless to say I was enthusiastic about the opportunity to try my hand at depicting the minotaur, one of the all time classic fantasy beasts. I wanted him to seem like an almost consistent creature - looking for those taurine lines in the human parts of his anatomy and anthropomorphizing the bull head and face - rather than just a bull's head tacked on to a man's shoulders. The character's a tough old brawler, with long horns, battle scars crisscrossing his arms and chest, and a strong "dont fuck with me" demeanor permanently grafted on his face (to be lifted in only a few choice moments with our young hero)

It would probably look even better with full body.

I love the idea of having a pencil drawing character that moves.

This minotaur looks very awesome in a FRPG way. Like the Weta minotaurs, this one hints at a life that is a little more than bestial savagery.

Great. A very believable minotaur!

I honestly imagine that THE Minotaur, the Dread of the Athens, was a much less 'consistent' creature, being both a dreadful prodigy and a terrifying portent of things to come (which I believe is the root definition of 'Monster'); a creature not far off a two-headed calf in terms of wretchedness and in the reception it received, albeit somewhat healthier and much more fearsome.

Now this is a MANLY Minotaur! (I must admit that I've actually given some thought to what I think Pasiphae's shame ought to look like and I admit that in my head he doesn't look nearly so fine a specimen as this - lording over nothing more fertile than an abandoned underground complex and being obliged to live principally on meat and moss will do that to a bull).

Looks brilliant! Does he have human legs like in classical art or are his legs bovine like more modern depictions?

I'd probably go with the hooved bovine legs like you see in more modern depictions. probably big, knuckly hooved fingers as well, like you see on the "chronicles of narnia" minotaurs. it just helps to sell that look i mention above of a consistent creature, i think

Yeah, I've always preferred the bovine-legged version myself. It just looks better to me over the classic human body with a bovine's you see in Classic Greek art. The only version of the classic human-legged Minotaur that I liked was this one of three different style of minotaurs they depicted in the old school animated version of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe where there were three different styles of minotaurs with one having bovine legs, one with human legs that were colored in a way that suggested that they were(even though there was nothing between their legs), and this one human legged version with the legs and feet colored brown and made it look like he was wearing brown pants or tights(this style was my least favorite of the three because the brown legs made them look silly to me).
