So how exactly do these work? I've seen them when I do a journal, but I always thought that they were only for those with a certain level of membership on the site.

You're correct, you do need a core membership! I forgot to add that to the description, sorry ;w;
The "free to use" refers to the fact that you don't need to pay to install it : )
