Description ~~~

It's time for some serious lineless practice.

It's also time for some serious background practice.

~~~
OH, MAN, I AM SO LOVING THIS.
(Shadow is saying 'WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!' )
I sometimes draw Shadow as a chibi...and he is still so fat. O.o
GOSH, HE'S CHUBBY. IT'S A WONDER AS TO HOW HE CAN GET OFF THE GROUND. NO WONDER HE'S FLYING SO LOW TO THE WATER, OMG. OH, NOES, I FORGOT MY TOWEL.
I'M WRITING IN ALL CAPS, HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA.
Anyways...
Yeah. (I sound so sane. o3o It's been a long day.)
I've been wanting to draw this particular scene for a while now, actually.
This is Saint before Saint...i.e; before she's scalped and beat up by the knights and picked up by Yazin and all that fun stuff. This is after she meets Thomas and they go with the Crusaders and yada-rada. Her actual name is Aila, but she took up the name Saint after staying with Yazin. (She never actually tells Yazin her real name until a few years into their relationship. O.o Poor guy. And, yes, Aila does have nice long hair until she's scalped. >.< )
This is the first time Aila flies on Shadow - Shadow is still very young at this point. Aila wandered off, bored, one day, and found him struggling in some weeds. She freed him, and then the next day she was wandering around he found her and grew attatched to her. Aila taught him quickly to stay away from the knights since he was young and growing very big very fast - the knights never actually learn of him.
One day she swipes a saddle, straps it on him, and takes him for a buzz in one of the river canyons, ha-ha. How about that for a joyride, eh?
Anyways, even after Aila is beat up and rescued by Yazin, Shadow still follows her, but he keeps his distance, still remembering to stay away from knights and other people. Aila frets because she thinks Shadow just ditched her, but one night in the Holy Land while Yazin is alseep, a very big, very happy dragon approaches her.
And then, of course, she has to tell Yazin that a humongous dragon is following around and Yazin is scared to death of dragons - (bad childhood experience. XD ) But he does eventually get used to Shadow and learns that flying between the cities is a lot more convenient than walking.
So...yep.
BUT GEES, LOOK AT SHADOW, HE'S SO FAT. I MEAN YOU COULD PUNCH HIS FAT-ROLLS AND THEY WOULD SPRING OUT AND PUNCH YOU BACK.
Lol.
This surprisingly didn't take too long - about four hours - which is long for me, I guess. O.o The longest part was getting all the flat colours nice and neat. I usually don't have to worry about that since I typically use my linework overtop of it all. Not a pixel out of place.
But yes...
I'm really proud of how the background turned out...since I've never really done any 'serious' background work before. I should just start doing random backgrounds and make them look really pretty. ^^
Here's Shadow's ref: ~~~
For now, this just pleases me so much...
Oh, and put the word 'Quasar' in your comment if you actually read all of this.
Enjoy!
Aaaah, background! Backgrounds are evil, aren't they?
A suggestion: When drawing rocks, you could try giving them an over-all surface structure rather than only adding some cracks. Something like the "bubbles" you used on the water, but smaller, might work.
I love the expression of both of them, and I think that's a great job you did on the perspective. of the dragon.
No-no, backgrounds are teh luff! I love them~~~
Yep, I see what you mean. This was, though, way before I got seriously into lineless/background stoof. I'm definitely more aware of trying to add textures!
Thank you!
Seriously awesome, the perspective and expressions look really great! Such a neat background, too, the water looks totally neat!
QUASAR! Joyride indeed, better than anything else you could take for a joyride. And I'd imagine his size probably didn't help matters as far as overcoming a fear of dragons goes.
Lineartlessness = hard.
I've tried... x'D;
But, oh man, this picture looks great.
I love the overall angle.
The shadows against the rock from the wing make it seem as if they're flying towards the viewer. @_@ I really like that.
I gives my eyes a twist in view.
I also really love the water. I envy anyone who can make water that good. ;
Awesome job~!
๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1
TwilightSaint In reply to Vempyremon [2009-11-30 05:42:24 +0000 UTC]
It is! I think I'm *starting* to get the hang of it, though.
Thanks! I always remember to add shadows and I think the effects are pleasing because it really makes the subject look like it's there, y'know? Like it's actually having some sort of impact - either blowing something up ( O.o ) or just casting a shadow ( ^^ ) on whatever it's close to.
(Blowing something up...wow. Now I want to draw one of my soldiers blowing up a robot! >8D )
Water is another thing I need to work on! I need to get it a little tighter and work on the shiny-ness, methinks.
Thanks again!
Oooh, I like the background. Especially the water directly under Saint and Shadow (the water splashing up on the canyon wall is a bit iffy, but not bad either). And the black 'spots' on Shadow, little nuances like that are my favourite. ^^
fffff it took me way too long to realise that was Saint. BUT HER FACE. YAAAAY.
(Psst. Quasar.
Also, nice repetition. xD That threw me through a loop the first time I was reading it...)
